im buying a 2ndhand semi-acoustic guitar at the buy/sell section.what should i look out for?

brands?
aesthetic appearance?
sound?
working condition of the preamp/electronics??


also,
should i go to a guitar workshop to set-up my guitar???
what do they do to my guitar????
