Height of Drum Throne

hello, would like to know what u guys think about the correct height of the throne in relation to the angle of the knee bending when ur foot is plaed on the pedal.

e.g if ur knee angle is 90deg. wont u have to use more thigh muscle to bring up the leg?

to me, i think as long as you're comfortable it's all good. the angle of my knee bending is slightly more than 90deg.

but using more thigh muscles would be good training isnt it hahah!

I usually have the throne slightly more than 90 degrees. Feels most comfortable for me that way.

hmm...........i don have a particular hight for the throne
but as long as it(the height) does not obstruct or hinder me
frm playing effortlessly (relax...nice balance...)than i'm ok wit the settings.....

quoting from Thomas Lang in his dvd,

preferably, your legs shud be angled at 90deg or less,
shud be abit more....
otherwise its still up to your preferance...

one ce you got that favourite seating height, you can make use of your drumstics as guide, as wat he says...
calculate using your stix, so next time at jamming studio.. or in any jamming studio, those will be used like your measuring tape...

Hi,

personally I like to sit high, with the angle between my thighs and my shins more than 90 degrees.

Reason being I can play my pedals with less tension and for me, it lessens the impact on my knees.

Think of an office roller chair. Somewhere just nice for you. Last time I used to like my seat high because I find my control better that way. But now, I'm more comfortable with 90 degrees too.[/list]

yea just back on friday, my band jammed and i kept making mistakes. kept screwing up and sweating and using excessive strength. WHY?

The drum throne screwed up, kept going lower and lower as i played.

I need more strength than usual on the pedals, couldn't reach the cymbals with ease, couldn't do good tom rolls, and sticks kept hitting the rims hence giving off unnecessary rimshots, till the extent my sticks fell out of my hands. I really sucked on friday. Oh ya, not to mention, for me, the lower the throne, the lower my confidence.

So when the studio ppl changed my chair shortly after i cursed and swore at an inanimate object, (the throne), my confidence was back to at least 90% and i was so comfortable.

So, keep your thrones high and comfortable to your level. Good posture= good playing.

cheers.

I think it would be good if you can learn to adapt to different situation. Sometimes drummers really don't have a choice. We have all our personal settings when we play at home. But when we're to play another drumset in a studio or at gig venue, it's really different. There's a limit to the changes we can make to the drumset. We wouldn't want to waste too much time adjusting heights of stands, tensions of pedals, tuning of drums etc because there's still sound check after that.

Some of the thrones could have been there for at least 10 years and they might not be adjustable at all. There was once when a sound man told me this, "A good drummer can pedal on any pedals. Don't need cobra or what one. The difference is only the effort."

Perhaps not everyone would agree with what he say but I guess what he meant was that we have to learn to adapt to the environment at times.

Right on there, caijunlong. We all do have our own little preferences, be it throne settings, snare height or even cymbal angles. But at the same time, drummers must have adaptability.

I've played in gigs where the throne would threaten to break into 2, thrones that were dangerously held together with just 1 thin screwdriver, totally unadjustable thrones and even thrones that were actually makeshift plastic stools lol. But however crappy the thrones were, I had to somehow find a balancing point so that my playing won't suffer drastically because of it.

I think by not having the luxury to bring everything I need/want to gigs, it kind of forced me to learn how to adapt to different situations better. That is why I think adaptability is very important for drummers.

yes totally bros.... must learn to adjust!

of course, it also depends on case to case basis.

for laurentrox, it sounds possible that the throne must be replaced at all costs.

the throne is really very important. if it keeps dropping and dropping as long as we sit on it, we must replace it. its very dangerous

yea man. the thrones in church are held together by gravity. once, i almost fell off. imagine if u fell abckwards onto something hard and injured ur back, worse still, your spine.

cant even think about it.

well now u see drummers bringing cymbal bags arnd for gigs etc.
in the near future u see drummers carrying their thrones arnd XD :D

The thing about the drum throne is, that at most jamming studios, either their too low or they're unable to be raised any more. I like thrones that are pretty high, higer than most of those at studios that is.

Why don't you bring your own? Thrones usually can fit into a normal sports back pack with the seat taken off....so its pretty convenient. I would bring it...cos whatever makes you comfortable will help you enjoy your jam session more...

You're right.. But first I gotta go buy one first! I'm using a dinning stool right now ._.

Any good recommandations? I heard the tama one's pretty comfy and budget.

Whichever throne you're getting, avoid those that adjust by pulling and secured with a nut. Those thrones are pretty much useless the moment the nut snaps, which will definitely happen over some time. Seen too many of those thrones get busted lol.

I'd say, get those that adjust by turning the seat. Those will last you much longer.
