Having Stage Presence

Hey guys, I'm wondering about that toughest part of any vocalist's job: having stage presence. What exactly defines it? How do you work at it? Is it all that important etc?

well, for me i had played in quite a few metal bands and of course ive met alot of vocalists in my genre of music, its all about energy and connection to your audience. it means feeling the song and projecting it in your voice your actions. and not standing there like a tree with your mike in hand and stuff. but moving about, jumping around and going crazy has its consequences. your vocals might degrade thru all that movement so i you shud have total control over your voice despite all the energy. but the vocalist doesnt bear all the reponsibilities as the one having stage presence tho, the other members also have to be in sync with the rest. :) thats for math, metal core music luh. for like much more down to earth bands like acoustics its all about sincerity because somehow the audiences can feel it. acoustics is hard to pull off, you have to hit the right keys and of course pitch perfect to attain a positive, subtle stage presence.

Stage presence

Firstly,

Looks = If you are naturally goodlooking then you're one step forward, yes as a singer you must look good, sorry to say if you're big size(tall horizontally) you tend to look "ugly" BUT if you know how to dress up properly, yes! no worries, especially for female singer it's best if you are slim etc etc sexy etc etc or beautiful face etc etc ...human nature...not only males even females will like "aww whoa! shes pretty sia..", but if ure big size as in sorry to say just talking fact "Fat", the audience will be like " lol hehe mann the ban dis good the singer O.o" BUT like i said, it's not too bad if dress up properly to suit your appearance. For male singers, usually not so critical regarding your body size, bnut of course if you're slim etc etc then you have the ++ bonus point, if you're not u can always work on your body later but for the meantime choose good suits :)
*Note: Nice music is beautiful so the person who sings it best to be as beautiful as the song.

Vocal= Okay to add on the points above, if ure FAT, but you have sooooper voice yeah everyone will be like whoa! what a voice man she/he rocks!, that comes naturally.

Interactive = As a singer you should be very interactive with the audience this is what we call it showmanship. If not you're gonna be a boring entertainer, if you sing in a pub, people will got bored of you and highly chance you'll never get your contract entended.

Conclusion: Look good+Good voice+Good PR skills = Good stage appearance.

My opinion = This region people go for looks then talent which i think abit too old fashion, we should take the Americans, Europeans as example, they grab singers, musicians with talents first then they will build up thier looks and stuff which i think should be the way.

To make over Looks and appearances are doable and easy compared to building up talents which one's should have it naturally.

Stage presence: just remember this simlpe equation for all your future gigs.

The band (musicians) parties with each other on stage.

The SINGER parties with the audience ...

Gotta say I disagree with fgl there. Different bands have different dynamics so it's up to you to decide who interacts with the audience.

I think Owatari Ryo from Do As Infinity (lead guitar) is a prime example. He's always the joker on stage and known for his call and response with the audience. And the audience obviously likes him, given their enthusiastic response, even when he plays them out with off key notes. So maybe having a good sense of humour is key.

just feel the music and move to it. dance if its groovy and headbang if its heavy. look at the audience. just be confident la..... actually, some people just have the natural talent to interact w the audience, some have to work(very) hard to have it.

disagree with fgl too, although it is definitely subject to the chemistry between the band, the genre, the style of the band.. Look at RHCP for example. They ALL party with each other. Flea goes nuts with both the crowd and his bandmates. N i dare say red hot chili peppers are a band with one of THE BEST stage presence

Yep, having stage presence as a whole is amazing. Check out bands like ACDC, RHCP, even Green Day.

For singers, something like Axl Rose, now he's got amazing stage presence.

Personally, I feel stage presence is like connecting with the audience, you can dance you can do whatever, as long as it's there, everyone's gonna have a good time.

to the 2 dudes who disagree with me ... valid points indeed... yes its true that there are many bands whose other members are outfront in the course of history -e.g The WHO - Townshend / AC/DC - Angus Young all more upfront thann their singers but its more a case of showmanship & gimmics etc ... hell even I do more talking & wayang to the crowd that my new female vox.

What I mean by singer parties with the crowd is that he is the focal and communication point between the band and the crowd. ALL VOCALISTS - Use this as a "mental" guide next time you go on stage and I guarantee U your stage presence will improve by leaps and bounds.

IMHO if the vox just sings his songs and leaves the intereaction with the crowd to his band mates during the breaks in songs or whatever, his / her stage presence wil; never improve.

SO ALL U FRONTMEN OUT THERE ALWAYS REMEMBER THIS:
VOCALIST PARTIES WITH THE CROWD .

.. if ur axemen tries to steal your thunder ... "accidently" unplug his axe .... .... if your basist try to act yaya ...slowly walk over to him and rock, then when he's wowing the crowd and not looking, detune his bass :-)

True that, I think the backing musicians should communicate to the audience using more of body language. The singers should be the one doing most of the talking.. Can u imagine axl singing his ass out then only duff and slash talks inbetween song while axl keep silent? abit wierd to me

Reactions: fgl
whatever you do never do this..

YouTube - Marilyn Manson Vs John 5

Doesn't look staged.. I'd have the same reaction if i was playing guitar and the frontman kicks my shoulder or something. But John 5's reaction was kinda outraged. But i read some comments that said that J5 's parents died a week before the gig or something. And another comment that said J5 told MM that he wanted to quit the band just before the gig and Manson got angry... O well :\

Okay...
I have a question off a band I observed quite recently..; What if the person looks like an idiot, doesn't even bother dressing up, fat like crazy, voice also so-so, but apparently his showmanship's really good, in the sense that it actually grabbed my attention and kept it fixed on the band. How does that work? Miracle?

haha fgl u must be damn scary to play with. detune e bass i like that one hahaha.

well to the person above me, u know how things are, usually both extremes work. U get a SUPER HOT MEGA SEXY chick whos like half (or totally, oh yeah) naked, she gets all the attention.
U get someone who LOOKS LIKE ASS, SMELLS LIKE ASS, TALKS LIKE ASS and THINKS LIKE ASS, im pretty sure u ll get just as much attention.

Can't speak for that since it's not usually a person's appearance that catches my attention during their performances,... I suppose you're probably speaking out of experience...
