firstly, u need to know what kind of sound u like. do research on strats and les pauls. they are 2 different guitars because they use different pickups. most strats use single coils while les pauls use humbuckers. single coils give a twangy sound while humbuckers give a fat sound.
once u know which u prefer then start looking at guitar models. test the guitars out to find out which 'feel' u like and what u're comfortable with. some ppl dont like les pauls cos its only single cutaway.
okay i'm assuming guitar u mean electric guitar.
but here are my recommendations:
for single coil, with 800 u can get a 2nd hand fender stratocaster made in mexico.
for humbuckers try the ibanez rg series. or if u like the thick fat sound, epiphone les pauls

Try looking out for 2nd hand Jacksons, you should be able to get an MIJ Jackson for around 800. Why I like em?
Their weight-wise light - But sound badass heavy
The necks are not too thin and not too thick, very comfortable for shredding, Ibanez wizard necks and so darn thin i find sweep picking on them a challenge.
Jackson Floyds are stable as hell, I'm a hardcore trem abuser.
The stock pickups (other than the budget range JS series) are all darn good.

test as many as you can, go with the one you like most (brand name should not be priority). refer to the reveiw section if it helps
