Guitar Theory Lessons

Hi guys

I'm considering taking up theory for electric guitar and i'd like to know any recommendations you guys have.

I finished grade 7 music theory and grade 8 for violin practical back in 2007. However due to the absence of practice/refreshment for 4 years, i am hence unable to apply my knowledge to the learning of the guitar.

It would be good to know any suggestions you guys got?

I know i could always self teach from online lessons but i actually prefer some realistic guidance

Thanks!

lol if you're grade 7 music theory of course can apply to guitar easily, i'm sure you could figure it out after a while. there are, however, books that teach theory with an electric guitar slant--i recommend Music Theory by Tom Kolb. can't rmb where to get though.

Well I would love to teach you, because I came from somewhat the same background as you, only mine is grade 8 theory, grade 8 practical for piano. But I did learn violin too just that I didn't take exams and now I'm a electric guitarist. Yeap so have lots to share with you

Knowledge does not equate to application i can figure it out after a while but like i said i prefer proper professional guidance. Thanks for the tip on the book!

once u learn how to hold a pick and how to pick the string, all thats left is to know where all the notes are and how the fret system works. in a nutshell, ur tuning for the guitar when u start out is, from the thickest string to the thinnest, E A D G B E. from there, apply what u have learnt in ur theory exams to find out where the chords are. but of course, a faster but more costly way would be getting a teacher to show u where the chords are and their shapes. actually youtube also have lar, but see which one u prefer lol

actually for ABRSM theory, you probably won't learn a lot of things, no modes, no pentatonic scales, no blues scales, no jap scales, no indonesian scales, no natural minor scales, for chords they go by another name such as secondary 7th chords for your maj7 chords. etc etc etc
