Guitar string (high-e) always snaps when tuning it

Hey, i have a floyd rose floating bridge guitar, and the highest string always snaps when im tuning it, meaning when i've tuned it to D, and i try to turn it further so that it can reach E, but the string snaps before it reaches that note.

It is not my guitar string problem as i have been using D Addario strings for 4 years with other guitars that do not have a floating bridge, and i can tune them even a few notes higher than E!

i've got a new pack of strings but the knob just gets harder to turn as well before it reaches E, and it snaps again and again. i think it has to be something wrong with the tension on the floating bridge.

Its nothing to do with the locking nuts though, as i always unlock the nuts before tuning them.

Floyd rose guitars are supposed to stay in tune (i've heard for that you dont have to re-tune the guitar for months), but im like tuning it almost everyday, or thrice a day, trying to get the high-e string in tune, and its a hassle as guitars with floating bridge requires re-tuning ALL strings if ONE string is loosened!

I hope someone can help me, I've been searching google for days but seems like no one else has experienced the same problem as me.

Have you checked the angle of the floating bridge to the body? Is it very high now? As you tighten the string, the bridge also moves thats why...

yep, its parallel to the body, thats why i dont understand. but as i tighten the strings it gets higher cause of the tension.

Its parallel when the E- String is not there? Anyway it should be at around 25 Degrees to the body then the E String is on.

You might need to adjust the springs at the back of the guitar.

you can also try bringing it to a shop, when you wana buy a new pack of strings, and just ask them. Try standard value @ woodlands

Hi, just share with you. i have guitar with floyd rose bridge but string through type (not the one with locking nut). it means the string is inserted from behind the sadle and no need to cut the string end. i have the same problem which the high E string always snaps. i realised that the tunnel profile of the part where i insert the string is a bit sharp, that's why the string always snaps (in a way it cuts the string end)...it probably quality defect.

i don't know what type of floyd rose bridge you have, but in the end i decided to change the bridge to the one with locking nuts (need to cut the string end) and until now i never had the same problem again.

Hope this useful for you.

Cheers

So before you tune up with 5 strings the tremolo is more or less parallel to the body, but when you add the 6th and last string and start tuning up the block gets pulled away from the body?

One reason could be your springs are too taught, loosen them up with a screwdriver evenly till when you tune up to pitch and the trem is at a nice angle for you.

Other reasons could include burrs or uneven machining on your metal parts that causes stress on the string as you tune up, with a combination of spring tension possibly.

And its just a nut, you dont have the nuts =]

what type of floating bridge are you using? or do you mean ORIGINAL floyd rose?

just go for a guitar setup. call beez/mike/whoever.
