Most of Vai's guitars are alder actually. The famous Evo, and the backup/replacement Flo are alder.
Not to say it makes much of a difference in tone for these guys. Their sound is so processed that I think the wood tone doesn't show much.
Personally I can't stand the way basswood vibrates. It just doesn't speak to my arm very well. Mahagony is cool, but I still prefer alder and ash.
I had a long, fairly heated discussion with my friend about vibrations though. He doesn't feel that it's that important. He feels that the tone and the feel of the neck and contour is more important. But to me it's all about the body's vibrations, then I work on changing the other parts to suit my taste.
Erm.
So anyway I think I kinda got lost up there. I reccomend a Yamaha Pacifica, they are versatile and good value for money.
If you like tops, PAC612V
If like me, you prefer topless babes  PAC412V
Both have floating bridges but no body route and no locking nut (wilkinson style). Alder bodies. Under 1k. Can buy from Luther. Alnico pickups. The 612 has a JB in the bridge. The only problem I forsee is if you want a humbucker in the neck, cos they both have single coil neck pickups.
My buying method is to play it without plugging it in first. See if the instrument speaks to you. Some give me good vibes in my arms, some don't. I must have played like 10 PAC112's so far and my favourite is still the one my friend bought. Man I miss that one. Gotta buy it from him someday.
If you want a guitar that will last you a lifetime, make sure you really sit down and play it till you are sure you are in love with it. Trust me, there are guitars out there which you will fall in love with. Don't settle for something that looks and sounds good but just doesn't give you that tingling feeling when you pick it up. TRY THEM ALL OUT!! Especially at the shops that won't get pissed when they see the same old face coming over and over again to try stuff but never buy
