hey all;

my guitar keeps going out of tune rather easily i noticed, so wondering whats a possible remedy? my strat doesn't have the same problem.
this one goes out after a couple of bends...d-uh...is it my tuning heads? or ..?

thks all.

p.s if topic has been covered already will appreciate someone leading me to the right thread. cos i can't find any similiar topic with the search function. cheers

you could try lubing the Nutslots with graphite... like pencil lead etc... if that doesnt work , then its probably the tuners.

On the same topic, there are little screws at the ends of my tuning pegs, will tightening these help to improve tuning stability? sorry if this is a silly question i'm not much of a guitar tech

Not really, as the tiny screws only helps to keep the peg in position. It's what in the tuning gear and the machining quality which matters.

The entire peg is a precision tool, you cannot really tell visually on the machining quality unless you have trained eyes. But the difference between a $25 set and branded ones like Gotoh, Schallar...etc is very obvious.

how does lubing help? will try it out tonight. prs non-locking tuners thot supposed to be alright one lei...sighz..
anyways, am looking to upgrade for fun la. u noe, like fix computers like that. keke. what can i upgrade ah? anything to recommend?

right now, am looking at SD Invaders and SD JB for my pups. mebbe change the knobs too. but electronics wise maybe someone can explain to me whats the thing with 250K and 500K pots etc?

thks!

WARNING!! Oil getting on your wood part might cause permanent damage. Be very careful to do that.

Bring your git to a git techie if you value it. DIY is ONLY good if you know what you are doing is good. Not trial and error.
I have seen disaster cases, where the owner "kay kiang". After trashing the git, expect the git tech to 'revive' it. Sorry, a doctor is just a doctor, not a miracle worker.

250K pots are found in more vintage config and pups, these days mostly uses 500K pots (Non active config). It correspond to the pup windings impedance. Proper loading gives optimum output level. Leave this to the tech.

thks for the warning mike! but i think chanmin meant use graphite to lube...like from pencil lead. keke. so no worries man, i won't be using oil on any part of my guitar...except the occassional oily fingers after eating chicken wings...kidding..

so, guess some things best for me to juz bring to shop ah? keke. ok la. but thks for the explaination. cheers!

Hey mike, how does it help to change the pots from 250k to 500k? heard that it's a 'recommended' upgrade? does sound get louder or tone get better?

hello guys ive also got a problem with the tuning staying!!
mine doesnt stay longer than a few songs!!
im using an ibanez with a floating bridge(flloyd rose)
i think its the old knife edge (edge pro 2)..
is it the flloyd rose thats killing my patience??
and will changing the tuning pegs to gotoh help?

Hi!

I've had a similar problem with my MIM Fender Strat and it was a big source of frustration for me as I've visited several local repair shops and none of them could rectify the problem for me even though they said "no problem!". Wasted money on poor worksmanship too...

My faith in the local repair shops was really low (no offense to the real guys out there!) until I've met Malcolm (empty71) who not only did an excellent job, he also gave me tips on how to maintain my guitar and I even had the opportunity to play a few of his guitars, one of which he made himself! This guy is really trained in the skill of guitar making/repair and he's the real deal! Definitely an all round nice and patient chap who would surely give your axe the attention it requires... you surely won't regret!

Thanks Malcolm!

I getting 20th anniversary bullet strat in olympic white ..... Anyone ever tried a bullet its in 3 single coils .... Im worried though cause the wood is called Hardwood sounds like some chipboard shit wood .... But i getting for 200 ....

ok la. hardwood ..
my squire stagemaster had that same wood , but i change the pickup...
Anyway its cheap right, gd for guitar projects..:)

On the topic of tuning stability, if its a new set of string you need to stretch it..else bring to a qualified tech, there might be some problem with the neck, or bridge..i think..

besides stretching the string until it's fully stretched (impt), you can lube the nut slots with pencil lead(graphite), and when tuning always tune up to the correct pitch, don't detune to it when overshot, if overshot tune down and up to pitch again. This takes out any slack in the tuning post.

I think the stretching part very impt leh.... last time i never stretch so string go out very easily... but now adays i stretch...the tunning can last very long..... not only stretch by bending... can try by tightening the tunning like tune the strings higher den the norm and den leave it for a while to let the strings really stretch....but must careful.... i once strecth the string while watching Tv...din notice and broke the 1st string .... hahha.....

hmmm...i don't think it's a good idea to purposely overtighten...there's only so much the neck can take u know...if too extreme might damage the neck...best way to stretch, is tune up to pitch, hold string down around 2nd or 3rd fret and use right hand to tug and pull up on the string, covering every length of it...then tune back and repeat until not much or no change in pitch..
