hey!

I notice there are some really well informed people on this forum thanks for sharing the knowledge!

I recently acquired an old guitar and would like a second opinion on it.... its a epi LP which is close to 13 years old... but in very good condition... also could anyone recommend any good luthiers around? I basically need to get the electronics checked out because it sometimes dies when switching... i opened the switch and checked the connections they seem fine... so would like an experts opnion...

any of you wanna check out my guitar?

Hello bro. I’m not a guru but here goes…

A 13yr old guitar merits an electronic components overhaul IMO. Connections may seem fine but the switches & output jacks need a makeover, simply because sweat & moisture seeps into openings which are beyond our access as far as cleaning is concerned. If you like the humbuckers then keep them, but if you feel they need to be swapped, then by all means go ahead. It’s only from 2000 that Epi equipped selected LP models with genuine Gibson pickups. The older ones were budget far eastern units which weren’t wax potted & induce lots of background hissing.

You can obtain spares from Davis & you’d do well to purchase these before 2003 expires & so will the discount on selected harwares.

I’d approach Beez (Music Plaza) for the electronic fittings, he’d done numerous jobs on my guitars & they were pro handlings which I’m satisfied with. You can also go to Swee Lee’s Bras Basah showroom & ask Jumat to handle this job. Davis can also do your electronic makeover but they’ll take longer to complete the task, nothing to do with job quality but more of a manpower issue here.

Beez & Jumat will usually give a discount if the task involves more than one component installation, eg:

Pickup switch replacement: Flat fee

BUT

Pickup switch + vol/ tone knob + output jack replacements: Disct applicable

Hi

Check out this site: www.thelespaulforum.com

it´s an excellent site for Les Paul owners. Go to the "Tech Area" and check out the previous threads on electronic modifications.

here´s an excellent thread that might be useful to you (There´s a thread on a guy doing a full electronic-replacement Modification, with pictures to guide u along):

You´ll find that the jobs are pretty simple. You´ll need a soldering iron and a couple of practices on some dummy objects, and you´d be ready to go!

I´m still sourcing for CTS pots in Singapore. Any idea where to get em cheap? Davis sells em (all parts) right?

Cheers
