Guitar on a plane?

Hey all,

I really don't know where to put this post, so i'll just post it here then.

Anyone of you travelled overseas with your guitars? May I know if I'm able to hand-carry a bass on the plane? or would I have to check it in? I sure hope not though, I'd rather hand-carry it myself.

hope I can find an answer to my little question!

thanks

Your help

Hi matt,

here to tell you my experience.
i brought my guitar to China recently and do not ever check it in cos i don't know what might happen. What i did was talk to the flight attendants and they would gladly help you with it. When i traveled there, they told me to leave it at the emergency exit door before i went through the doors of the plane. i guess what they did was to give special attention to it and i received my guitar at China's airport.

However it was slightly different when i went back, i brought the guitar along inside the plane and the air stewardess actually made space from the first class cabin's storage to accomodate my guitar even though i was from economy class.

so i guess when you're at the airport just be courteous about it and they'll ensure your bass has a safe journey too! =D

I took a long haul northwest airlines and brought a Gator hardcase (les paul shape). Hand-carried it and stowed it overhead in the luggage compartment when flight from Sing to Japan. Jap to Boston also stow in luggage compartment. but internal flights (connecting between states) I had to put together with check-in luggage.

So bass-sized guitars should be fine for major flights...smile and be nice!

hmm. why not just try asking them to have it specially watched? I'm sure they'll do it for customer service, just appreciate their effort. hehe.

Aww, thanks you guys!

ya, I'm afraid to check it in, I won't want my one fingerboard bass to be a crossroads with two fingerboards instead. haha. great, i never knew i could bring guitars on the plane, i was afraid it didn't fit the "maximum bag size".

also, one last question, is it advisable to loosen the strings before i bring it up? i heard about neck warping due to pressure and tension of the strings in the air. myth?

my experience was that the ground staff was reluctant to let me carry it on board, they told me I wasn't allowed to bring it on board but I convinced them to let me bring it on board. The air staff however didnt really care and just stowed it away for me. so i guess the ground and air staff have quite different attitudes
