Hi everyone im new here and started learning guitar a few months back in school. I'm thinking for learning the electric guitar from yamaha now and seen through their lead guitar course.

Anyone knows whether is it possible for a person to join the lead guitar course as well when he dont have any knowledge on guitars? Cos' my friend is also interested to join me but he doesn't know how to play at all.

Another question is i saw from the template about the lead guitar course. There are 4 steps in the course if I choose the group one. They are: Prep course, Step 1, Step 2 and Step 3. Anyone knows what do they teach in prep course?

Thanks for the advise! Cheers :D

Sorry although i know little or nothing abt the yamaha course details, i can tell you a few things abt learning any instrument.

For electric guitar, which is the principal instrument for the lead course (presumably), their focus would most probably be on melodic approaches as opposed to harmony. It simply means that your friend, would start out by learning on how to play a string of notes effectively (and accurately), as opposed to playing chords.

For a person without knowledge on any instrument, but with a strong classical music background, its possible, but not widely popular as a means of starting out on learning the elecric guitar.

Without musical background, understanding of harmony is crucial to becoming a good musician, and then later on a proficient player.

I will assume that your friend wants to play lead guitar only or is not willing to put himself through their basic course, which probably covers foundation skills as a whole. This is where private guitar tutors might come in.

Oh yeah before i forget...

I have 2 friends who are accomplished guitar players, and they can solo to save many lives, not just their own. I highly recommend them as they are currently active teachers + playing at the same time. PM me if you want their details, i'll post it here for everyone.

hey there, i can't tell u much about the yamaha lead guitar course. however, i did take their classical course a few years back. i took it for abt 2 to 3 years. i can tell u that the theory and practical knowledge i learned there really helped alot in me learning the electric. even though there isn't much solos in the classical, it has really helped in understanding your equipment better. the better u understand ur gear, the better u'll use it to its max potential. so well, u guys cld go for the course yea, but it wld be gd to read up or self learn on some basics. cheers! :D

how much does it cost? i wanna learn theory. vern , chan mention so much about theory...right now i am playing like an enraged ah beng.

i've taken the lead course before...took it halfway up the prep course...found it not too educational, and i quit.

well...this is not a 'put down' to the yamaha course, and in fact, the prep course did provide me with the very basic of the electric guitar.

i'm not sure whether all teachers teach the same thing, but i had the privillege to learn under patrick, who, in my opinion is a good guitarist.

he started off with pretty nice songs, by cream, deep purple and then the offspring, stevie wonder, GnR(we did paradise city's intro)

and basically, throughout the course, about 4 mths of it of what i took, consisted of riffs, scales, power chords, hammer-on, pull-off and the basic skills..

thereafter, the songs get faster, and more and more diff. to play...and yeah..basically, it takes you to a level where you can, with motivation, to proceed to the next stage of your guitar education.

yupz..it was quite fun though... =)

Erm guys, then if i know abit of basics.. Chords, pentatonics bla bla. and abit of scales. What level am i counted as? I can't shred though.

Intermediate or something? I wanna take courses or get people to teach me.. Recommendations?

i think still beginner....best to learn some theory.

i know i am still considered beginner even though i know the stuff u listed above.

eh we all noobs what...

firstly, i think learning guitar is like cooking maggi bwahahaha
u never boil the thing how to eat?
so that means ah.. u need to put the noodles in the boiling water first
den u put everything in den eat .. confirm shiok

in other words, foundation and basics - a must.. if u jump straight into
higher level of playing.. den how?

btw the maggi ah is curry flavour
