IT’S 11.12pm. And all over Singapore, people are prepping for the moment when the Noughties cease to exist, and the new year and decade begin. Whether you’re in Downtown East watching Hoobastank or at VivoCity wondering whether Kym Ng’s hairdo makes her look like a cute gamine or Dr Spock relly or at Marina Bay wondering why everybody is screaming, one thing is for certain: I’m not going to be there.
Yep, this is a quiet moment with the family (all of whom are sleeping, but hey, we’re in the same flat), pondering that inevitable question: Why can’t I sleep yet? Anyway, here’s what’s happening at the moment as I fondle my remote (and no, that’s not a euphemism)…
Channel 5: Jade Seah is talking about SMSing your thoughts and messages to loved ones.
Channel 8: Chinese pop act Fahrenheit is giving their love and thoughts for the new year.
Okto: A chef is preparing food.
Vasantham: A guy is singing. No subtitles, so can’t understand a word he’s singing…
Suria: loveTwo young girls are talking. No subtitles so can’t understand a word they’re saying but seems serious…
Channel News Asia: Some presenter is saying something.
Channel U: Images of Singapore are flashing onscreen as a newsreader talks about… something…
TV1: News about the death of Gus Dur.
Yes, I don’t have cable. No, I don’t mind not having cable. Anyway, I’ve always found New Year’s Eve to be a little confusing. Like how am I supposed to feel? And if I don’t feel as excited as everybody else about the coming of the new year, am I an idiot? (Well, I am one, anyway, but still…)
Guess I can collect thoughts about the past year and work on resolutions for the next. Let’s see…
Resolutions: Lose weight – have just realised that I look like that fat guy from Wolverine (minus the blond hair).
Finally pass my driving test. Don’t ask. Highly sensitive topic with my pet hamsters.
Get more sleep. (HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!)
Oh, it’s 11.30pm. And on Channel U… Korean star Rain is singing.
Channel News Asia: Something about medical benefits of spices.
Suria: One of the girls is talking to her school friends now.
Vasantham: A guy is singing.
Okto: A chef is listening to another chef.
Channel 8: Some girl with a beret is singing.
Channel 5: Some girl without a beret is singing.
TV1: A man from Langkawi is talking.
Right now, I just want to hit the sack, but something inside me is telling me that if I don’t stay up till midnight, I’m going to miss something important.
That’s my excuse. What’s yours? At any rate New Zealand, some Pacific island countries, bits of Australia, Japan and Korea have all turned one year older already.
Oh, Coldplay’s Yellow is on the stereo. Oh, I just so happen to have a bottle of sparkling wine (aka champagne that is not allowed to be called champagne just because they say so) which is called Yellow too. Okay, I know what I’m going to do…
HAPPY 2010 EVERYONE!
