dude....

i also bought the toneport and also currently looking for a set of monitor speakers.

city music sells a decent pair for like close to 500 bucks.

I also recently saw a set of behringer which cost like 110 bucks!

I dun know the quality manz....

pls share if found a decent set.

well, can't go wrong with Sony 7506 cans. should be abt $200 if i remember correctly. never regretted getting those after spending money on toher cans.
as for monitors, for your budget you might want to consider the Yamaha HS50M. i A/B'ed the Tapco S5, Yamaha HS50M and KRK Rockit RP5. i took the hs50's. but could be because i was used to the sony cans. they have tighter low ends and better clarity on the highs. but i guess its a matter of learning your cans and monitors..
anyways, hope i have given you other recommendations to help. the hs50m should be less than 500 for the pair.
cheers

Yup I have to agree on the Sonys. As for moniters, have you considered M-Audio's moniter speakers? I think they're around your budget if I'm not wrong.

KrK RP5s also 500 bucks, just like the M-Audios. I've been working with them for about 1.5 years, and they haven't given me problems. Ever. Just that the bass response isn't too great, but what do you expect from a 5" cone?

Just get a sub, if you like. Cheap sub is RP10 or the Tapco SW10 :P

As for cans, I use the Sennheiser HD25. Those are quite pricey but suit monitoring in high noise environments like clubs. The sound isolation is quite amazing. Don't wear when crossing the road. You'll never hear a car coming.

Well, in the 500 plus category there's quite a handful of worthy candidates for the money. I had a chance to compare 3 of them back to back. They are the KRK RP-5s, M-audio BX5a and the Alesis M1 Active 520. Here are my thoughts on each of them.

Firstly the KRKs. This was the first pair that I heard. Nice smooth sound with a tight low end. It definitely brought life to the electronic breakbeat track, which was the source material for this audition. Bass was tight and punchy. Mids and highs smooth. A nice sound that I liked.

Next, the M-audio. The mids had more 'presence' in this speaker, at times sounding rather harsh. Bass was tight but i felt that it lacked 'punch'. Overall, not a comfortable listen.

Lastly, the Alesis. They have the same 'character' as the M-audios. In other words, they have that same 'presence' in the mids but smoother sound overall.

Well, these are my thoughts on the 3 speaker that I auditioned. However, the comments are based on my personal thoughts on the quick audition session I had and not a professional test of any sort.

Haven't heard the Tapcos yet. Perhaps fibredrive would kindly share his opinions on the 3 speakers he mentioned?

i use the sennheiser HD200, it's about a little over 100 at simlim
same as the HD 25: good for use in high noise situations, dont use when crossing the road. good for use in jamming studio when your drummer is too loud and your amp isnt placed behind you.

Get sennheisers they are one of the best in headphones. get one with linear frequency response and not bias on either frequency so u can get a proper mix.

isn't that what we mean by "monitor headphones"?

however, one MUST remember that the monitor headphones operate on the linear frequency response. when u do a mix, don't pump the bass too high or EQ the high freq overtones up, u'll get a very crispy crackly sound on home system speakers, mp3 players etc because those generally come with boosted lows and high mids, stuff like that... gotta know that what you hear on your monitor isn't what the people at home are gonna hear

What you can do, is to use your monitor headphones as a comparison, with all the other speakers you have. So for example, I use the HD-25, the KrK RP-5s, and crappy computer speakers to listen to my stuff, so as to get a sort of balance.

Ultimately, the experienced sound engineer can supposedly make stuff sound good on any system.

Fourplay. awesome mastering.

More awesome mastering (in my opinion) would be on albums
Dream Theater, Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
T-Square albums (and most other japanese "fusion" bands?
Bon Jovi stuff

and definitely JOHN MAYER.

back to topic: my headphones work great for me :D i'm pretty much used to them. i hope they last! i think they're out of production already...

For me, in the studio, my AKG K240 has always been my weapon of choice...I always bring along my K141 when I am doing LIVE

For NearField, I am still using the NS10Ms and the Genelac 1031, and the newer models which I am looking at are the ADAM A7

For Mid Field, I have heard the JBl 4410s and are quite impressed by them, the newer models which I am looking at are the ADAM S3A

For Main Monitors, the best sounding which I have heard are the Urei 809 and the Westlake Audio HR1
