hey, can anyone recommend amps around 50Watts or below for home practice? How about Marshall AVTs? I am looking for those with rich, crunchy and heavy overdrive.

Peavey Bandit. great clean + drive

Yeah... plus one to that. Try the peavey transtube studio series too. Very good too. Try out as much amp as possible and maybe you'll find a sound you like.

Marshall can achieve very good overdrive but most of their clean sound, especially the AVTs aren't very good. You got to try out as many amp as possible, don't buy marshall cause it is a marshall. Music is a very individual thing. Marshall may sound good to them but not to you. So try out as many amp as possible and see which one you can get the sound you looking for. As far as i know, peavey amp are able to get a very heavy distortion but i don't think they are suitable for blues type overdrive. AVT to me are just good. But i choose a peavey over the marshall AVT. The peavey transtube is really good. Very value for money. These are just my 2 cents. So take it as a opinion for you to buy amp. And since you are looking for heavy, crunch overdrive, fender is out. IMO, fender's overdrive is the worst. But you never know... :D

Its a great idea too to check out what your favorite guitarist's gear are....from there you should be able to narrow down to a very specific range of amps.

Hope this helps....

I'm currently using the Tech 21 TradeMark 10 :-)

Yea marshalls are not infamous for their cleans (except for DSLs which may put fender to shame). But who buys marshalls for the cleans anyway.

Have you guys tried to test amps at Davis without buying at all? They are notorious for treating "onlookers" with indifferent attitude.
Its quite unsightly to see their expressions when you say "oh i think i will come back another day" or "hmm its not what i am looking for"...
I want to have a feel of how different marshalls sound between the DSL range and AVTs... so i don't know if i have a chance there..

i have tried a MG once before with a friend but he bought it in the end, so it was alright.

I dislike the Marshall AVT for a few reasons. Basically, the 12AX7 preamp tube doesn't play a very big part in the preamp section. The distortion is very muddy and unfocused, it wouldn't cut through with anything. Plus, the cleans on the AVT is not good.

I think the Peavey Bandit is a good investment, however, I'd like to push the Tech21 Trademark10 to you. Its a small analog solid state amplifier. Extremely versatile, based on the Sansamp technology. the distortion is modelled after the Fender (Tweed), Marshall (Brit) and Mesa (?). I played my friend's TM10 and was immediately shocked at the amazing tones it oozes out! The cleans were crystal clear and had a shimmer to it, very defined tone. The distortion was not bad, even though i thought the Mesa modeller didn't sound too nice but for the price, its well worth it.

I think the TM10's clean is not the cleanest.....its still abit fuzzy....I think it has something to do w/the fact that I got EMGs.....dun have any passive pickups on my guitars...so I can't compare but from what I've read the the TM10's forte is defintely not the clean but the distortion. :-)

Nothing beats a fender amp's clean sound. I almost bought a fender amp but its overdrive, turn me off.

What is mesa sound anyway? I never get a chance to try it. Of all the artist using mesa, i think it sound abit modern... anyway using mesa can tell us its sound?

hi... im thinking about getting a peavey bandit 112... is it good by your opinion? and do you know where they sell peaveys? like an official dealer or a trustworthy dealer? thx

If you're looking at small wattage amps, try the Kustom Tube 12A amp.

It has a 12AX7 pre-amp (tube) and a solid-state power-amp. 10" Celestion Speaker i think. Below $200 for a new one.

The Clean sound is pretty darn good for a small amp of this size. Change the tube to a lower-gain Philip, turn the Mid-shift button (boostin the mids) and you have an extremely fat and smooth clean tone! Fantastic!

Check out it's reviews on www.harmony-central.com (very good ratings, which i agree :D )

There's one store at Sim Lim Square selling it and Luthermusic carries it too. Check it out! 8)

I am looking for a budget guitar amp (ard $100) for practice in the room... is it better to look for 2nd hand amps or new amps?

I am actually looking more for a clean tone from a guitar amp so I do not really mind if the distortion channel sounds crappy (just not too awful!) Actually I just want to approximate a jazz guitar sound with a solid body guitar. So is there any recommendations for an amp that can do that? and controls to use?

$100? That is too low for a decent practice amp. But if you want nice clean, fender is the way to go. But it may be too high for your budget. I heard riveria (can't remember the name, JM guitars sells them.). It's clean sound is outstanding. But i still take fender's clean above anything.

how about a good distortion amp for umm lets say under $200? got rather tight budget and im inclined to peavey, open to marshal but not too hot for it
