Hey, I've just fooled around with my Pod X3 Live and I find that recording through the USB was a chore so I decided to record by the S/PDIF way (bought a custom cable from funan for $12) directly into my Creative X-Fi Fatality sound card.

Here's the link:

Forgive my sloppy playing. But I would like you guys to comment more on the tone here.

I was trying to nail John Petrucci's tone using either a Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier or a Mark IIC+ simulator. Both sounded rather different and I think the Mark IIC+ sounded closer to the album version while the Dual Rectifier sounded closer to this live version of his: YouTube - John Petrucci - Glasgow Kiss (Demonstration)

I'm suspecting he was using a Dual Rectifier Road King for that vid.. Not sure what exactly he used for the studio version though...

Here's the set-up:

Yamaha Pacifica 312MII, Dimarzio Tonezone bridge
Live 6 Pod X3 Live
Noise gate -> Tube Screamer (maxed) -> Mesa Mark IIC+ -> Dual Rectifier 4 × 12" cab -> Shure sm57 mic off axis -> Compressor -> EQ -> Analog Delay -> Dark Hall Reverb
S/PDIF into my Creative sound card and recorded with Audacity.

Imo, it sounds a little too round as compared to the studio version, and not enough punch (maybe cuz i didn't palm mute). How about you guys?

Why do you feel that USB recording is troublesome? I havent actually tried USB recording with my XTL. Is there any sound difference between analog, USB and SPDIF?

Well, if I connect my Pod through USB, I have to disable my Creative sound card, and I won't be able to monitor thought my desktop speakers... I have the ASIO drivers which might solve that but I've yet to try it.

If i record through the analogue way, my beautiful sound card keeps hard clipping and the sound is horrible. I will only get a good tone if my input volume was low then i would needa amplify the sound in Audacity which may also amplify noise at the same time.

S/PDIF's the least troublesome cause the signal is digital and my sound card handles digital to analogue conversion pretty well so I can monitor through my speakers without disengaging my Creative X-Fi

Sound differences for these? Really depends on your sound card and cables... If you have pro sound card and pro cables, recording through either way should not have any noticeable differences.

i'm not sure how you're doing this:
Shure sm57 mic off axis -> Compressor -> EQ -> Analog Delay -> Dark Hall Reverb

But if you're looping that 57 back into the pod, you're probably creating a feedback loop.

And, i would only transfer through USB. But that bypasses any external miking techniques.

No, that's not external, that's a setting I chose on the Pod.

Edit:

Let me fill you in on what that meant.

For the amp simulation part of the Pod X3 Live, there a few tweakable settings:

1) Amp model
2) Cab model
3) Microphone model/ Placement
4) Distance of mic from amp

For 3), there're 4 options so far. They are Shure SM57 On Axis, Shure SM57 Off Axis, Sennheiser MD 421 and Neumann U67.

Ah, in that case, the clipping is possibly all internal of the pod. For software synths and fx, if you chain a couple of plugins together, there's also a chance of clipping within the plugins itself, depending on how it's been coded, so it might not be your soundcard. It might also be your're not listening to the material at the appropriate speaker volume or the clips are due to the speakers themselves. Usually i maintain only one of a few settings for listening volume that have been cross ref with CDs, it's not as comprehensive as a K-12, K-14 type setup, but i'm not going to buy an SPL meter just to do that.

Try using the SM57 on-axis setting or bring up the mids :-D
