Amazing piece!
When the Explorer first appeared alongside the Flying V and Firebird as part of Gibson’s “Modernistic” Series in 1958, there were many who dismissed them as too radical and futuristic. They certainly didn’t look like anything anybody had seen before, and in particular, with its angular, asymmetrical body and pointed headstock, the Explorer was such a radical departure and met such resistance that only around 100 were originally produced at the Kalamazoo factory. What few have survived will fetch half a million dollars or more today.
But never fear, for the 2018 Gibson Explorer embodies the trail-blazing style of the 1958 original in both looks and sound. Its resonant mahogany body delivers classic hard rock tones and the granadillo-capped SlimTaper neck is a dream to play, with cryogenically treated frets which will last a lifetime. A pair of Burstbucker pickups deliver the classic tight low end, complex midrange, and sweet highs that befit such a masterpiece of guitar design.
