Gibson LP Standard?

Based on the standard 20% for most guitars at Swee Lee, it would be $3,840 unless you can bargain for more, which if you try really hard, the price could still go further south.

Typically, Swee Lee gives 20% discount. More if you're a regular.

PinkSpId3r, why a LP Standard? Can I recommend the Classic instead? Here are my two cents worth:

1. The Classic comes with a 496R ceramic magnet humbucker in the neck position and a 500T ceramic magnet humbucker in the bridge position. These two pickups are super-hot, just ask around. Last time i checked, one pair of these were going for US$250 on eBay. The Standards are equipped with BurstBucker Pro pickups. These pickups give a more vintage tone. So, if you're into mordern rock, go for the Classic.

2. Classics come with 1960 SLIM TAPER necks. These necks are very comfortable to play, compared to the 59 ROUNDED ones on older Standards. On the latest 2004 models, Gibson offered 1960 necks on their Standards as well. Be sure to check out both necks to see which one suits you.

3. The standards come with pickup covers. According to a couple of LP players i have talked to, pickup covers tend to dampen the magnetic field of the pickups somewhat. You can remove them, but i heard it's quite a hassle as the cover is soldered on to the pickup itself. (p.s. can anyone verify this? i heard this from someone actually.)

4. The only saving grace for the Standard, IMO, is that it offes a classier look these days. Gibson has been putting a lot of "cosmetic" effects on their later models, with all that carved AA maple top and what's not. You only get a normal carved maple top for the Classic. Hence, Standards these days are more expensive than Classics. Back in the 90s, i recalled, Standards were way cheaper than Classics.

Hope my input can help you in your decision.

P.S. I don't believe in 2nd hand stuff. You can try scouting around for a decent one. Remember that pre-85 LPs are made in the original Kalamazoo, which is the original Gibson factory. If you can get one, count yourself damn lucky. Anyway, the original factory, together with the original employees, is now taken over by Heritage Guitars. Apparently, they make damn good guitars, comparable to the pre-85 LPs. Problem is, i can't seem to locate a dealer in Singapore.

To be even more accurate its solder to the backplate of the pickup, its quite hard to get the cover off but I've manage to find a few ways although I've not tried any of them, the straight forward way, is to juz take a penknife and cut through the solder.

2nd way is to use one of those solder remover where by u heat up the solder and use the remover to suck the solder off the back plate.

yeah heard that the pickup cover sucks the sound.

A friend from the US told me about heritage guitars...said its almost just as good as Gibson guitars but there are no dealers in singapore.

heritage guitars can be purchased frm dreamtime music. www.dreamtimemusic.com or guitar77 down at excelsior hotel basement. another guitar recommendation would be de prs. its a very versatile guitar n has a slimmer neck profile than a gibson. n also better cosmetic tops n more available colours. prices r similar to gibsons. davis just had a new stock of them.

Sorry guys but as a long time Les paul owner and player, I dissagree with alot of what Y2K says. The new LP Std with the open coils sux. Yes the slim neck may appeal to some (particularly newly converted ex strat players) but the old profile neck aint that thick. and it is part of what a LP is all about, with a feel and sustain all of its own. Additionally it is the choice of most LP players worldwide, that's why they still offer it. And as for taking of the P/Up covers from your Std- a cool way to reduce it's value. Listen dude, if you wanna buy a Gibby LP, you gotta know what you want. It is crazy to spen 3-4K on a guitar and then start pulling it apart-might as well buy something cheaper . Alternativel- change the Pups, so you can re assemble with no damage.
Heritage guitars are great, good build etc but they aint that cheap either and a limited 2nd hand Mkt when you wanna resell.
Y2k doesn't like 2nd hand guitars, So if you are rich enough no problem , but there are plenty of bargains out there. A little patience and you will be surprised what is sitting under someones bed here in Singapore.

Yeah. My bad. I missed out this option.

Anyway, the SLIM TAPER neck vs. ROUNDED neck issue is strictly a matter of preference. I know what Canon means when he said theres' greater sustain from a thicker neck. Problem is, I played an SG equipped with a ROUNDED neck once, and my left hand was aching after that. I've got small hands i guess :D

Apart from Gibson, look at Tokai, Epiphone Elites and Heritage. If you have the guts, go for a custom warmoth. The AAAAA top (if you pay extra) will look better than any Gibson top.

You can also get a gibson LP studio plus. It has a flamed top, it sounds good and it's much more cheaper.

For me, i rather stick with Gibson for les pauls. I've played many copies, heritage, epiphone blah blah. But i still prefer the feel and the sound of a gibson LP.

Don't buy a Studio. Try to save up for at least a Classic.
You'll regret it. Cuz Studio's tone is not as good, IMHO. I owe a Studio for 10 years, and i can tell you, it pales in comparison to a Classic/Standard.

And the last time i checked a Studio costed SGD2500 (list price), Classic was SGD 4300 and Standard was SGD4800.
