Hi, im basically a beginner at geetar. anyway yesterday I bought the movie 'Rockstar' and one of the guys were being told opff because he wasnt making the squealing sound properly.

So I got thinking about this and wanted to give it ago. I asked my friend but I think we confused each other but anyway I think he was saying something about artificial harmonics.

could someone please guide me through it? He said play the string and lightly put your thumb on it, but it just stop the sound all together.

cheers

high gain is needed. ur friend is correct. Increase ur treble alittle, it worked for me. sometimes, u need to be lucky.

u should turn the gain up, but for the treble, not to full, as it may cause ur tone to sound different from what u like.

An artificial harmonic is any type of harmonic produced by modifying the vibrating length of the string, as opposed to a 'natural harmonic' which are played at the open string nodes (12, 7, 5, etc.).

So, A.H.s can include types such as pinch harmonics (the squealy, where you catch the string slightly with the fleshy part of the picking hand thumb - note you must also do this at a node of the shortened string length e.g. halfway between where you fret and the bridge), tap harmonics where you fret a note and tap the fret 12 frets higher (or 7, or 5) and those other kind used commonly in classical guitar where you use the index finger to touch the string node and pick behind it with the thumb.

My friend,
that's called pinch harmonic, I believe

Higher gain is easier to achieve this.
The key in on your picking hand, the way you hold the pick.
You need to lightly touch your thumb on the picked string almost simultaneously.

Try it on the D or G string, that will be the easiest.
