How is the recommendation for this product??
I was actually thinking of getting MPK25 however since i have iphone, why not get this iPL25... anyone knows if this is good? I have Yamaha PSR e413 keyboard.. I need MPC pads now.. Was wondering if i shld get iPK 25 since iPhone has virtual MPC pads can be synced to the iPK25...Is it really efficient or just waste of money rather spend more and get the MPK 25?
Can it be used in Ableton software to record?
Or should i simply just get MPK25?

The ipk thingy is just a very strip down midi controller. With the soundsource from iphone, all that you can play with are pretty much thru the midi keys. If you wanna trigger drums, it will be better thru a physical pad, which the mpk has.

Even though theres virtual pads on the iphone or any of those i thingy, whats lacking, is the tactile feel of a real physical pad. For sure that a virtual pad will and can get the job done triggering samples, but its pretty much different feel on the fingers dynamic hitting on glass display. Another thing is that the display on the iphone is kinda small, if really needing such device to play with, i would prefer ipad size instead.

Yes, you can record into ableton. Theres 2 things that we are looking at for the ipk recording into ableton. With the soundsource/samples from the iphone and ipk, we will only be looking at putting audio signal into ableton. This, will prolly need an audio interface, with the audio output connected to the audio interface and monitor through ableton.

The other one, is to connect ipk to computer via usb cable. The soundsource/samples will be from the vsti, drum rack within ableton. Ipk will only act as a midi controller triggering those software instrument.

Other then the mpk, theres a new offering from akai, the mpk mini, which is a combo of their LPK/LPD series. That one much more strip down and without modwheels, but much easier to bring around.

Yes, I agree with PatheinRaindropMoe. It's not just the tactile feel, but also the velocity sensitivity that's crucial to playing virtual drums via pads.

Below 400 what can i get? I was thinking of getting LPD8 or MPD18 with LPK25..
I checked out the akai mpk25 its like almost 600 bucks... way beyond...Besides i have a yamaha e-PSR 413
I need to do some recordings at home.. need those knobs too...any recommendations?

WOW how much is a MPK mini??

For recording, you prefer some transport control button, some motorised fader with some knot. More toward surface control. Of cos, you can go without any of them. I guess you are more on midi, so getting MPK25 maybe better. I think you PSR got 2 knot to let you do midi assignment, and yamaha mod wheel can do some sort of fader control. If you don't do midi assignment very often, I don't see any point of getting the controllers. I have a fantom S88 that have knot and drum pad. Seriously, I don't use them very often for my DAW.

Back to the key question - what is the main reason for getting a new controller? You mention doing recordings at home - what kind of recording? As you aptly pointed out, you already have a Yamaha PSR-413 - which can in itself function as a drum trigger. Having trigger pads depends on personal preference. I have been using keyboard for drum trigger instead of pads for more than 10 years. That's just my preference as a keyboardist.

As for knobs or faders or both, it all depends on what exactly you want to achieve in your setup. Knobs are more useful for electronic music - control of parameters associated with those kind of sounds. For most recording situation, faders gives better control over volume changes. As I deal with more softsamplers, the mod wheel becomes my indispensable tool.

Hey guys i been looking around.. MPK MINI and Novation Nocturn 25..
Between this two, which one is better..As Patheinrain pointed out MPK mini is stripped out..
Between this 2 which one stand out better.. I have narrowed down hehe

both can be good depending on how and what you wanna do with it...

anyway, if wanna develope preferences for future gear purchase, go for noturn

how bout korg nano series, as in the all the 3 controllers?

pad for playing drums, kontrol for knobs and faders, key for added trigger pads or smth?

is that ok for ts situation?

one thing to consider is using 3 usb ports(for individual nanos) over 1 single one for nocturn or similar controller. Workaround is can try using a usb hub, but i have never really try to run all 3 with a usb hub, so not sure if theres enough power from one usb port to cater for the 3 nano controllers via an usb hub.

The kind of music only affect the choice of midi controller to a small extend. Midi controller doesnt do sound, so its more of how you wanna utilized it(trigger samples, play finger drumming, live tweaking of vst/vsti parameters, playing melody lines, chords, arpeggiating notes etc).

I understand.. right now the problem is my yamaha psr e413 doesnt have drum pad and i dont liek to strike e piano to do e drumming.. At least with pads it would be more sensitive and more flexible in my opinion.. I neeed knobs for e control of parameters.
Im using ableton and vsts are something i love hehe

hehe, actually quite clear liao yeah, what you wanna get...

The yamaha, imho, just keep it as a separate instrument and if really wanna use the drum sound in it, is to record "one shot" samples of the various kit as wav files and import into ableton live library, insert into drum rack and trigger the sound from midi controller pad.

Even though it might seem troublesome, but advantage is that you can build your own sample library which you can tweak the way you like it on the psr.

Even if without the drum kit samples from the psr, with ableton, depending on whether using suite or standard version, theres plenty of drum kit, one shot samples that comes with it which can be played with within drum rack via a midi controller

Lol yeah ableton. theres some dude selling m audio pads with knobs. should check it out. 150 only

Oh, i got the nano series from japan, comes with some usb hub. Connect to the hub and it works like a dream lol. Connected to a lappy too.

ah yeah, i forgot bout the korg usb hub thingy. City music also have that when buying all 3 together, comes with the casing and the hub. Not too sure if now still have that. I bought mine 2 years back, now only the nanokontrol still surviving. The nanokey and pad up lorry liao..

Nocturne 25 has Automap - enables you to map controls easily with a DAW. Definitely a deal breaker for me.
