Getting a drumkit

jenocide

hi... i have been thinking about it very long already. i really want to get a kit for my own... i have no space constraints of my own

i need something reasonable for me to play my genre...

my genre ranges from rock, hard rock, grunge, metal, heavy metal, punk rock, post hardcore, nu metal, pop rock. gonna use it to jam, experiment, practice, and if need be, to gig.

my styles are closest if not completely similar to this...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CugCVXHDgIA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTrF1WOheFg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgBrsHxIKlA

... but i tend to like to venture beyond those confines... and try stuff which are a little more extreme, although i can barely keep up. i also like to experiment with the various beats available, sometimes making what i called "hybrid" beats

assuming we are using the youtube linked songs as a base gauge of how my playing style is like, is there any possible combinations for a full kit including cymbals?

any brand recommendations? any price estimates (i have a budget of 1.5k, up to 2k at most)? and any recommendations as to where those can be procured? thanks!

i kinda laughed a lil' when i saw this thread. no malice intended whatsoever though.

first question, do you have that much space?

second, can you afford it?

thirdly, do you really need such a huge setup? for home practice?

my knowledge of cymbals is crappy, but you're prolly gonna need sabian AAX cymbals or meinl mb10/20s i guess. chinese gong ride, i guess you can buy a mother huge 22"/24" china and use it for a ride lol? and how do you define nice sound?

i dont think just one snare is enough actually.

i edited it. haha~ yea, what you said will be fitting for my previous, un-elaborated plea for help. sorry for the late editing...

hmm, bro jenocide for the budget it might be too tough to make a full drumkit wif cymbals.

i would suggest you get the drum shells first. then cymbals slowly acquire bit by bit over time.

from the genres u mention above, i wld say the common thread is 'rock' ...yes/no?

shells can be either rock-sized (larger) or fusion-sized (smaller) generally. however, the combo of wood used, shell size and depth, no. of plies all affect the sound. as do the workmanship (cutting of bearing edges, lugs etc.)

try to scout around for best possible deal - shells and hardware.

worst case 5 pc shell kit (2 mounted 1 floor, bass drum , snare)

if possible 6pc for additional sound option.

try to get best possible wood. most likely u get philippine mahogany shell or basswood.

cos pearl visions (low-mid end - birch) already cost something like 2k for 5pc shell plus hardware only.

maybe be patient and see if something good 2nd hand crops up (owner upgrade and wants to sell mid range kit)

snare, use the one come wif the kit for now. wif good tuning most stock snares will do the job fair enough. u can get more snares over time, and when you develop a taste and more awareness for the different types of snare sound.

cymbals maybe if u can, set aside 1-1.5k over time, say over next 12 months.

there are many cymbal options for rock, and all are valid.

you could use something contemporary (sabian aa/aax, zildjian a custom)

or richer (turkish/istanbul/meinl/sabian hhx/vault/zildjian k or z custom) as long as you feel comfortable expressing with the sound

good luck and take your time wif your precious pennies!!!

you do have budgetary constraints though lol.

just the kit alone is more than your budget leh. what about cymbals. and i'm pretty sure you wont want like ZBTs or ZHTs cos they sound really bad.

why dont you start out with a basic 5 piece kit first, get some nice cymbals then continue saving up from there then slowly expand.

at least you'd have something to practise on first.

you mean $2000 isnt enough? woo...... pardon me yea, its my first time buying a kit so... haha~

i am trying to research on the pearl rhythem traveller, tama superstar and imperialstar kit.

I would say u should scout around for good second hand deals. Not just on soft but everywhere literally. I managed to strike a deal with, believe it or not, a guitar shop to sell me n excellent conditioned 2nd hand tama superstar kit (practically brand new, ONLY very little stick marks on e skins) PLUS 4 brand new cymbals of my own personal choice for 1.2k! Got A custom hats, crash, fast crash and a paragon ride. So actually with 2k and alot of looking around and sensible negotiation and of course contacts, u can strike these good deals. =D

tim>>> i will take note. thanks for the advice, it will be really helpful..

another question to all : does any local dealer have a stock of a tama starclassic performer?

me still sourcing for sabian and/or zildjian cymbals

no shit timmo! wtf. why do people have all the luck?

maybe you should try buying toto or 4d this CNY, maybe you'll strike top prize.

actually, jeno, there was this deal recently, a pdp kit, pretty good shite going for like $700+? think it's def gone now though, but still can try to contact the seller.

and i dont think you'd wanna check out the RT heh.

superstar's good stuff. but you buy superstar you wont have spare cash to get cymbals.

you can try SL sims drive for tama starclassic performer, try.

try asking alvin about his prices too.

woah starclassic performer! i don't think you're budget is enough though....
er you should try swee lee.

Not all of us are lucky enough to have contacts who can point us towards a deal that is almost unheard of. Thus, we unlucky folks have no choice but to head down to the shops.

Having said this, be very sure of the purposes for which you are buying a drumset. I would want a set that would last me a very long time. Some may want a temporary set before buying a 'better' set in the future. If you belong to the latter category, do not waste too much of your cash on a brand new set yet. Look around for used ones, instead.

Next, there are the usual brands: Tama, Pearl, Gretsch, Mapex, Yamaha, etc ( I only know these...sure to have more). These brands have a range of models drumsets, from the beginner to more pricey models. W can tell you which brands and models we prefer. However, only you alone must decide on the set that you want to buy because you must be happy with it. Do take your time in choosing a set.

i am lacking a crash+stand though... and possibly a double pedal (the seller did not mention anything about a pedal), if i get that kit that is

oh oh, and i got another lobang~ a Peace Legion~

Standard Size
Bass Drum 22" x 14" 16 Lug,
floor tom 16" x 16" 12 Lug,
tom tom 13" x 11" 12 Lug,
tom tom 12" x 10" 12 Lug,
snare drum 14" x 5.5" 6 Lug,
HS-420 hi-hat stand,
SS-972A snare stand,
BS-400 cymbal boom stand,
P-410 bass drum pedal,
cymbals: 14" x 1 Pair,
cymbals: 16" x 1 Pc,
DRT-109N drum throne,
5A drum sticks

all for just S$620~ wee~~ but i am not sure about the cymbals... not sure how true it is... and how many stands i will get.. (it said a pair of 14" and one 16", so 2 + 1 = 3, wonder if i will really get 3 stands haha). any advice on this?
