hey what genre do i specify for my band whose playing stuff like guns n roses, acdc, scorpions, black sabbath,motley crue, def leppard and stuff.

actually you are right too, some books call guns n roses and AC/DC heavy metal, they say that bands like metallica tried to get other classifications like trash metal...etc. because they wanted to differentiate themselves from that genre.

The roots of metal being rock, Hard Rock can b a simpler alternative to define Heavy Metal, especially when u have mixed influences between the real heavy metal worl & other rock styles. Ppl used to call heavy metal bands hard rock in the old days. So for this individual's music style, it's best described as Hard Rock because of the mix. Metal..not really.

they will definitely belong to either classic rock or hard rock in terms of genre of music...that's what most ppl classify those bands in i guess. Though in your list there's Motley Crue...which ppl classified them into the big hair or glam genre? Heck, it's all music

ACDC, scorpions - hard rock(scorpions oso do some slow rock)

Black Sabbath - Heavy metal
