First experience in a band

the first time i played in a band with strangers was at indochine, sanctuary bar, with their in-house band, Cats in the Cradle.

was carrying my guitar with my good friend walking by one sunday night, and their lead singer Jeffrey called out to me and asked if i wanted to play.

i played Oasis' Wonderwall that day.

feeling was ultimate!!! i remembered the adrenalin just before we started... and the rush during the show (getting worse), and the bloody aftereffects... i couldn't walk properly. too much adrenalin makes your legs wobbly.

and there was a shitload of people in the bar... and there was a bigger shitload of people standing outside by the pavement...

exhilirating is too weak a word to describe...

edit:
and its definitely better than sex.

In the december holiday, I played twice in a band for the first time.
The first one is just a practice really. My cousin was setting up a band to play in his school festival and they didn't have a drummer back then so I was asked to join just to see if the band could work.

It wasn't bad other than I didn't know some of the songs they were gonna play (they like Indonesian songs, Peterpan, etc). Pretty good directing from the vocalist on when to come in and what kind of rhythm to use though.

The day after, I went to my friend's restaurant. There was a live band playing and I was asked to play drums. The first song was a nightmare since the bass drum pedal got stuck on my trousers. My bass drum became irregular and it affected the rest of the beats. Then I redeemed myself after another 2 songs (didn't know the 1st and 3rd songs...just improvise).

Just be prepared when you're about to play with a band. Know your stuff.

don't feel too bad about this, even big stars like liza minelli, tea leoni and bono throw up before their performances. you are amongst the great!!

you know especially for classically trained pianist when all your life you have been trained to develop that "slient pulse" in your head and when you're jamming with a drummer , sometimes it gets too loud until you kinda loose concentration especially when you're doing a solo....

Blame the drummer eh? But solos can be frustating of course.

Is there any such thing as piano amplifier? But you can put a mic inside and make it louder right?

Sometimes you got to be able to filter the sounds and listen to your own instrument while playing. When I played with my cousin, I found out I tried to adjust to the slightly faster guitarist or slower bassist and I messed up (you might like to argue that the other instruments follow the speed of the drums...).

thank you for that piece of information. \m/ =)

first experience in a west side junior college stage band,
only good enuf to play pads and strings.

played on a Roland JX3P, Alpha-Juno and Juno106.
strange now these synths are collectors items.

can only play fairly well though, nevertheless learned a lot and
enjoyed myself very much for a year. later selected to be
vice-president, treasurer and music arranger for Chinese reportoire.

next band played in a band playing Jap rock.
these guys are good players, the only reason I
was in becos I just bought my first synth.

thinking back I can see how much I've grown to current standard.

My advice for all band players, keep on playing and practising,
your skills level sure to improve.

I'm glad that I moved out of the classical training and solo piano
to play in a combo band.

life is just like a box of chocolate, you never know what you'll get.

mm

pretty much excited. but i was worried if i wasn't good enough... :) yeah and i will try hard to follow every single thing i was told to do. heh! no experience mah. i didn't want to screw big time.
