is the fender jaguar worth buying or should i invest in a newer type of guitar. i play rock but also need nice clean tone. is the jag right?

I think if you want to go Fender route, get something with 2 SC and 1 Hum. More versatility IMHO.

Personally for rock, I will use a LP or a PRS or an Ibanez for that matter. Coil tap will give you decent clean tone. Ultimately, it depends on your amp.

the thing about hum is that i don't like the warm sound even though it prduces a heavy distortion sound. i've lways liked the sharp sound of the single coil.

ah my friend.. i think it's time for you to check out the sonic realms of the P-90s... these are single coils, but they sound fatter, almost rivaling that of a humbucker. the most affordable P-90 equipped guitar in the market currently is Squier's Tele Custom II:

i like the Jaguar- very unique guitar in my books. the problem with Jags is the bridge (together with the Jazzmaster/ Mustang). if you are a hard strumming player, you are better off informed that the string saddles of this guitar aren't ones design with proper indentations to hold the string in place. these grooves look like the threads of screws. strum hard, the strings will 'jump' off the saddles...

but that Cobain guy owned the Mustang & he strummed like no tomorrow you say? & the strings were all in place? Cobain's lefty Mustang/ Jag was a modded unit- humbuckers + replacement bridge...

yeah i've heard that before. the mustangs almost impossible to keep in tune. but i've always had doubts about squier. it's fender jr. but somehow it's developed a reputation of lousy guitars. i dunno about teles, i'm not a big fan of them. i just like the abnormal shapes of guitars, like jaguars, mustangs, and icemans. it's just gives it more colour and makes the guitar interesting. i'm no tone-freak though. wat's a good version of a jaguar though? '62 jag or is there another version?

the Squier reputation has gone one up since its revamp in 2000. if you hear people equating the Squier name with bad outputs, then they've not been to the stores to try the new breed.

Squire Super sonic is pretty interesting n guys like Crispian Mills uses it.. n Fender Jaguar.. ooh Jaguar!!.. though alot have said that the tremolo piece makes the axe out of tune all the time.. i still think it's a great buy.. n i would suggest that u buy a MIJ rather than MIA.. cheaper n reliable quality!

sharks... sorry about that.. maybe i got it wrong.. i think i got it wrong.. well supersonic has got some good reviews though..

the Supersonic got two thumbs up from the various magazines that reviewed it then. i remember No Doubt's Tom Dumont giving his Hamer explorer a 'rest' while playing the Supersonic for quite a period of time...

Coil tap. A normal humbucker pickup is make up of 2 single coil pickup. By dividing it, you can get a single coil pickup tone. EMG 89 is an example of it.

For normal humbucker with 4 wires, you can also do a coil tap to get the single coil tone. Usually you will need a push pull pot for it.

coil tap & coil split have been used interchangebly & assumed to mean the same but it's actually not.

coil tap refers to 'tapping' the humbucker's lower output while still leaving the humbucker in full function (ie both coils in use). coil split has been defined by Brundi...

it's discontinued in 1999 & it didn't even make it here... the only Squier left resembling this guitar is the current Jagmaster:

i've heard that the jaguar and jazzmaster bridges are the shittiest things ever designed on the earth. if so i was thinking of replacing one of thos bridges with a tune-o-matic bridge. is that a good thing to do?

hey man- i just read about this bridge swap like 15min ago? pure coincidence eh? here's the story:

back in 1958, Leo Fender designed the Jazzmaster bridge for heavy gauged strings. that's the reason the bridge string slots were simple screw thread-like contraptions. the higher tension would make sure the strings stay put but some players prefered light gauged strings...

light-gauged players who can't stand this popping off the saddle problem, had their guitar's bridge swapped for the tune-o-matic version by gibson. it's a sensible thing to do, more importantly, the swap worked because the Jazzmaster's unit was top loaded like the gibson's. however another problem entailed: the tune-o-matic's structure waas conceived to conform to the gibson's radius...

if you are not a hard hitting player, the Jaguar/ Jazzmaster might be just the guitar for you...

the jazzmaster in the beginning was targeted at jazz player who might want to have a different guitar other than a archtop. Apparently, it didn't really take off. Funny how the guitar turn out to cater to other form of style.

The is a joe pass dvd where he was playing a jazzmaster along with his backing band. He look young at that time, black and white footage.
