Excessive Noise

hi, 2 questions to Gear heads out there.

1. it is necessary/good to groud the output jack of the guitar to the back of the pots?

2. 6 tube gain stages for the preamp section, when the gain is maxed for all stages, noise (not the musical feed back) is very strong. thing is, this happens with and without the guitar plugged in. i percieve the noise as interference. so the question is: can a better cable reduce such noise? the pedal i'm using is LPB 2ube. it's a stereo tube preamp, and i cascade the channels into mono. sure, half the boost is quite enough really, but the engineer in me just want to find out if there is any solution to this. :D

thank you for your help in advance :) merci beaucoup!

To answer 1), the pot shells act as a shield, so it would be good to ground them. Also, the pickup's -ve wires are usually soldered onto the pot shell so grounding the shells would be necessary.

Dont' think I can answer 2) but I suggest checking your power supply. Sharing with air con or refrigerator? An a/c noise filter might help but there's lots of hype out there, and they can be quite expensive. However don't you think by maxing the gain, almost any amp can be on the 'noisy' side?
