Regarded as the grand dame of Chinese plucked instruments, the pipa possesses a versatility of sound that can depict sentimental longing and create sound effects. Resembling a miniature pipa, the pear-shaped liuqin distinguishes itself with its bright and penetrating tone, capable of conjuring an exciting atmosphere. The warm and mellow-toned zhongruan typically takes a supporting role in ensembles, but in recent decades also stands as a solo instrument in its own right.
Enjoy the resonances of these instruments as SCO musicians Seetoh Poh Lam and Zhang Yin perform a repertoire that ranges from ancient tunes such as Lady Zhaojun Crosses the Frontier to contemporary works like Liu Xing’s iconic zhongruan concerto, Reminiscences of Yunnan. The recital also features the Impressions of Songshan, a duet composed by Wang Hui Ran for liuqin and pipa, presenting a unique pairing of the two Chinese lutes.
In collaboration with Singapore Chinese Orchestra
