“Raw Jazz sparkles with the brio of live performance… Exuberant and unexpected…” - TIME Magazine
“He sings straight from the heart but if you listen closely, there lies some immaculate technique and maturity under all that unchecked emotion.” – allaboutjazz.com
He was once the pop-rock singer-songwriter who packed in the crowds at the Fat Frog café with his edgy songs and his guitar. These days, Singapore-born-and-bred Hanjin is a much sought-after producer and songwriter in Hong Kong, known for writing soul-pop-rock hits for Cantopop stars such as Jacky Cheung, Eason Chan, Joey Yung and Leon Lai, and composing the 2007 Pepsi campaign song sung by pop idols Christina Aguilera and Rain.
Now, Hanjin is back in Singapore in yet another successful incarnation – as Hanjin the jazz singer. This March, he launched Raw Jazz, his debut album in which he recorded 11 jazz standards – backed by some of the finest musicians in the Hong Kong jazz scene – in one take, to recreate the “raw”, spontaneous feel of a live jazz session. Lauded for its brilliant musicianship and Hanjin’s mellifluous delivery and fresh take on well-loved jazz classics, the album has since become a success, with Hanjin’s arrangement of Antonio Carlos Jobim’s Wave securing the top spot on Hong Kong radio charts.
This November, hear Hanjin deliver songs from Raw Jazz such as The Nearness of You, Honeysuckle Rose, Skylark, Cheek to Cheek, Wave and Moody’s Moods for Love, as well as a few of his originals, with energy and sparkle in a homecoming concert of jazz standards with a twist.
(60mins, no intermission)
