Epi is a cheaper version of Gibson... Almost as good as the real thing... Howver, Gibson isn't well-known to dish out excellent basses (with the exception of the Thunderbirds) so you shouldn't expect much. In fact, you're better off getting other brands for half the price yet almost on par with regards to quality... My 2 cents.

to me Epi doesn't even come close to be a 'cheaper version of Gibson'. what one gets with an Epi is strictly Epi quality, nothing Gibson-like...

despite the high quality displayed by selected Epis (i adore the late John Lee Hooker's Epi Sheraton), it seems that Epis are conceived with a budget in mind. i'm not revering the Gibson too much in this aspect but moving Epi to far eastern dominance indicates where the parent company intends this entity to be.
i definitely respect selected Epi models for its immaculate build per se but it's not to be judged against the Gibson standard, which many have done. a good Epi is a good Epi, why must it be measured up against a Gibson? the commercial association is inevitable...
