End state of drumsticks?

hi, i just started on drums and my first pair of sticks is slowly chipping away

i would like to ask, when do you stop using a pair of sticks?

I used to use my sticks until they broke. And I've broken countless sticks. Never got injured by it though. They usually split slowly rather than explosively though. Anyway, i think for the sake of your cymbals it's better to change once the chipping gets too bad. I suspect that's why 2 of my crash cymbals have cracked in the past. :(

well i just started and haven't really seen a broken stick before
i just assumed looking at the way the shoulder is chipped it might fly off if it broke

now i know its hard to get injured by breaking sticks

I have broke a drumstick before. it was during my jamming session. it broke n hit my face. luckily no blood.

chipping sticks does not lead to cymbal cracks... technique wise u might be wrong when u hit it.....

My 3 main pairs of sticks, VF steve gadd sig, Vater pro rock, Promark Shira Kashi Oak.

all 3 sticks have been chipped pretty badly and none of my cymbals have cracked when used this 3 "severely chipped" sticks.. tho it will change the tone a tad bit when u hit the shoulder to the bell.. the ping is abit muffled.

thats all... and yeah a stick breaking experience deserves another... "quote from myner" hahaha tho i don't advice it, sticks are pretty expensive nowadays and we should do our part for the environment..

hahaha

 any case where a drummer killed by a breaking sticks?

It's all fun and games until somebody loses an eye.

I think a better way to say it is if you're getting very badly chipped, you might be using technique that hurts the cymbal. Haha yah I agree that chipping sticks is NOT the cause of cymbal cracks, but they might both happen because of the same reason, so it's a symptom to look out for.

If you're hitting in a good way, then it'll take forever to wear down, although it'll still chip. But if you hit the cymbal so the cymbal cuts into the stick (and you'll know this because the stick will have a lot of "cuts") then it might hurt the cymbal...

When necks and shoulders are too thin, it causes more vibration when strike. When you start to feel that, that is the time you should change your sticks. This is a warning that your sticks are going to fail anytime soon.

Agreed.
I change sticks when I feel the stick starts to thin out and loses it's "feel" to it. Either that or my stick kinda just. *piak* then I have half a stick. But ah, damn bloody expensive. Every time i head down to Yamaha I buy 3-4 pairs a go.
