Drumming for Kids - Any Advice?

PEACE

New member
Hello. I'm posting a question because I do need advice on drumming. I'm a guy who plays a little guitar & bass.

By chance I had brought my 3.5 year old son to School of Music Clef Suntec City Mall and the instructor (a young man) sat my kid down on the drum set for a trial lesson & he learned pretty fast & was pretty thrilled with his new found skill.

I wonder if this is an appropriate age to learn drumming?
Any other good music schools to recommend?
I could probably buy a drum set with mute pads, but how realistic is it when you practice at home? (I live in an ordinary apartment.)

My kid seems musically inclined, so I do hope to explore drumming first, rather than the usual stuff like piano, violin, etc.

Thanks people.

hi there peace,

i think its ok to learn drums at 3 1/2 years as long as you stay on top of your kid and observe his interactions, interest level and progress pace, physical habits from lesson to lesson.

the choice of school is not as important as the teacher your kid will be learning from. i strongly suggest you establish a relationship with the teacher, so you can ask him informally (maybe when you pick him up) how did the lesson go, what stuffs was gone through with the lesson.

if your son shows inclination to learn any other musical instrument, or likes singing, let him change the instrument focus after a period of time (say 3 - 6 months) let him explore

you can evaluate buying a small drumset, or drumset with pads after he has had some time and the interest still sticks.

make sure you get him earplugs right from the first lesson !!!!

cheers

Thanks Plainsman for your insights!

The instructor is an easy-going guy, I think I can connect with him fairly easily.

By virtue of my son's age, I am actually allowed to sit in the studio during lesson time, which is 30 mins, once a week, one-to-one instruction. So that's a bonus for me.

I think my kid likes music, in his free time he will hammer away at the xylophone, electronic keyboard, strum my guitar, etc. although it hardly sounds like music now, probably closer to noise.

At the music school, there's a Premier drum set for sale, 20-inch bass drum, 1 crash, 1 hi-hat, no ride, going for $720. Last 3 sets. Set of Mute pads going for $200. Kinda tempted to buy it, coz I'm keen to learn too. What should I look for when buying a drumset? Or should I just buy 2nd-hand?

Thinking ahead if I really do decide to buy a drumset, should I make a pact with my upstairs & downstairs neighbors that I will only allow him to play drums unmuted say between 2-2.30pm daily before I actually buy the drumset?

Any suggestion what carpet I should buy to put the drum set on?

any drumset is cool... most brands make comparable drumsets.. bundled with stock cymbals, its good enough for folks whose focus is to get the hang of drumming

if you're good in scouting out bargains, you can try getting 2nd hand, do check the buy/sell drums thread.

carpets... a softie mentioned mustafa sells good and cheap ones  make sure you measure the approximate size you need before buying !

its good that you're thinking of playing just half an hour... a lot of drummers i know try to pound their drums at least a couple hours a day... hehe

Thanks people for your replies. Really appreciate it.
I emailed my question to The Music Lab, so let's see what Alvin says:)

And yes, coincidentally a friend gave my son a kiddie drumming set as Christmas present so we'll be making some noise with it on Christmas day when we unwrap the gift:-D

Wishing all of you Merry Christmas & Happy Drumming;)
