Does Digital Delay affect Metalzone sound?

When i connect my digital delay Boss DD3 after the Boss Metalzone, it seems to affect the tone of the Metalzone even if the DD3 is not turned on. The sound becomes quite harsh and it sounds quite ... hhmm ... death metal like, even when i set all the controls less than mid points.

I heard the DD3 is capable of sucking the tone from the distortion. Is it true? U guys have this problem? Will an analog delay solve this problem?
