Does anyone here make their own guitar cables?

I'm going to make my own, using the Canare GS-6. Is it good? I use the Star Quad to make the interconnects for my headphone amp. Should I use the higher AWG (thinner) cable for my patch cable? Or should I just use the GS-6 all the way?

What is the benefit of making your own when there are so many good types available on the market? Is it cheaper? Better?

Not sure about cheaper but it's definately more fun, and possibly better. The ability to customise your own length, terminate it with plugs of your preference, choose what kind of solder to use.. People are into DIY because of the ability to customise, you know.

I dunno - no offense, but I just think that the concept of making your own cables isn't particularly fun; but of course, each to their own, but if I had the time for such DIY activities I'd choose to build a guitar or little tube amp.

I'd be interested to know what you do end up making though and how much it turned out to cost and how good they were - you never know - they could turn out to be better than ones already on the market and you could start your own business. :)

For me, it is fun to be able to make them because it also means that you can repair them. Sometimes it's a shame to see perfectly good cables and plugs not working simply because of a loose soldering. Besides being able to determine the length, I can choose either to have elbow or straight jacks. However, I do buy cables - especially those short ones that connect direct input boxes to amps.

Well, building a guitar and a tube amp are in my list of DIY things to do, only not yet.

About the cables that I'm going to make, they will be pretty similar to what there is on the market, except that I made my own. I made my own interconnect cables for my headphone amp before and they were very good, so I should expect my guitar cable to work the same. And as what johnleong said, I could repair them if they ever screw up because I made them.

Starting a business, well, it would be impossible because audiophiles have been making their own cables since ages ago, and the parts are available everywhere. Sound engineers make their own cables, the old uncles at Adelphi, Sim Lim Square and Sim Lim Tower make cables on the spot for you. It may be possible if I venture into hand woven silver strand cables, but that would be targetting a niche market and not very profitable on the long run. There are also people doing that already. So, I'm satisfied with making my own cables. :)

Great. When I started out, I began with the simple straight jacks before 'graduating' to the more complex canon (mic jacks) and heavy-duty elbow jacks. My common mistake then was forgetting to insert the plug cap into the wire BEFORE soldering the tail-end jack - it is like wearing a hat first before putting on a T-shirt - so have to redo the nice soldering.

Build your own

If you want to try building your own guitar / instrument leads, check out the video we recently added to You Tube.

It hopefully gives you an overview of what you need to get right to build a guitar cable......build a guitar lead
