Do lyrics mean anything to you?

hmm..it's always solo this and riff that, tone here and tone there...
what about the lyrical aspect of the song?

You guys have any lyrics from any songs that might have any profound impact or any that might have connected with your emotions?
or for any reason...the lyrics are just...a beauty..

Masquerading as a man with a reason
My charade is the event of the season
And if I claim to be a wise man, well
It surely means that I don't know

Carry On My Wayward Son
Kansas

Every now and again sometimes
I get lost on the wind of a dream
The air gets clean and the seas get wider
I can do anything

Anything
Mae

There’s something about the look in your eyes
Something I noticed when the light was just right
It reminded me twice that I was alive
And it reminded me that you’re so worth the fight

Echo
Incubus

these are just a few of which i think have had many a meaning being debated..but well...i guess what matters most is how they mean to you personally.

nah it does not matter to me.. the emotion in the song is what it matters.

cuz its hard to find a song that suits ur mood and what had happened.

example.. typical scenerio.. u broke up...

u wanted to listen to a sad song... example i chose 'the saddest song' by ataris.. the emotion in the song suits ur mood but the lyrics is about a father's love.

so yea... if nice lyrics.. its a bonus.

its got to be led zeppelin songs.... man lots of them have really really good lyrics like battle of evermore, no quarter, the rain song, achilles last stand, kashmir etc.

Hmm, most of the time when i listen to a song, i'm searching for melody, i hardly ever pay attention to the lyrics, well mostly cos i can't usually catch what they're singing. Checking up the lyrics will reveal a whole lot of other stuff, but as far as lyrics go, i'll put my pick on epic metal, progressive bands, Symphony X, Rhapsody, Kamelot, Avantasia, Blind Guardian, Adagio, Sonata Artica, stuff like that.

Rhapsody - Emerald Sword

"Finally happened the sun lit their eyes
the spell was creating strange games of light
Thanks to hidden mirrors I found my lost way
over the stones I reached the place it was a secret cave
In a long bloody battle that prophecies told
the light will prevail hence wisdom is gold"

These band's songs have stories in them. Which is really interesting. It doesn't catch and hold me in the emotional feel, the sort you find in love songs and stuff. Rather, i enjoy letting the imagination flow, putting pieces of their "story" together and enjoying the dream of fantasy.

If you're talking about just pure emotion, then it'll definitely be instrumentals that strike me the most. The ballads especially.

i used to listen to the lyrics only. but not anymore now. Sometimes i dun even know how to sing it but i just like it. One of the songs that i think have great lyrics is:

beatles - let it be

Some of them do, but I always thought that the lyrics on Stairway to Heaven were *dreadful* :).

These days I almost never read lyrics on purpose and pay little attention to what is being sung. I went through a phase (that lasted about 10 years) when I listened to almost nothing but very very heavy death metal where the lyrics are so cartoonishly ridiculous that they just made me laugh when I read them. Of course, when those DM vocalists 'sing' you usually have no idea what they are saying - it is just some guttural noise, but I am much more interested in the sound of the voice as an instrument rather than as a story-telling or narrative device.

I love Led Zep... but they have one of the worst lyricists in the world. I love Robert Plant as a singer but he's an utterly crap lyricist.

"There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold"

The 1st line had me on the floor for ages...

"When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll"

WTF?!!?

But the best one is from the Immigrant Song:

"We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming home!"

Yes, indeed, I'm coming home... but that all said, I love Led Zep,

btw, Grim Brody doode, are lyrics important? Your signature says it all. :D

DEFINITELY. lyrics are 1/3 of a song.
it's just as much a craft as melody and arrangement. a good set of lyrics can really heighten the intended emotions of the song, as well as distract the listeners if the melody sucks(so the listener will still somehow listen to the song) while crappy lyrics can waste a good tune.

but of course, my views may be slightly different coz i'm doing chinese commercial music.

however, i was once so much into gunsNroses, metallica(stopped listening after the black album coz everything after that was so metallica-gone-commercial), slayer, deep purple, led zepplin, scorpions, CCR etc.

i'm still very much a DT fan though. :)

sometimes songs dun sound complete without lyrics...but there are times where lyrics will ruin the song...

but personally i love lyrics by system of a down...even though sometimes i dun really understand what it means...haha

haha. since i'm a lyricist/vocalist, must say something to this.

true enough lyrics may not be necessary in a song. but if so, then there'd be a heck lot instrumentals out there. and its pretty hard to like just... hum along to a music. words give POWER!

my lyrics are often written to express how i feel or my experiences. maybe its just me la. the way lyrics are sung, is what gives the music that certain... power. i mean listen to brandon boyd (incubus) and bono (u2) sing. the voice is another instrument that seals the whole music.

If you're looking for a good lyricist, you should check out Bright Eyes. Conor Oberst writes the songs and damn they are good.

Oh and try Ani Difranco too. Great writer, great acoustic player, great singer, and she owns a record company of her own. She even goes where most 'manufactured' artistes wouldn't dare to thread lest they look like idiots - politics.

Ani Difranco is an amazing lyricist (which rhymes with feminist), guitar player and singer as well. I have only heard her Little Plastic Castle... the rest of her albums were too expensive for me to get.

fored doode, you've heard her cover of Prince's 'When Doves Cry'? Simply amazing... :D

depends on wat kind of lyrics... meaningful ones like good charlotte-the truth

that i like... but other trash stuff... nah.. heck care... lolx...

I love Led Zep's music, but the members aren't exactly ideal role models, think: the mud shark and the ringing phone(Led Zep fans will know :D )

oh, the satanism part also. NOT GOOD! :x

it plays an important part dude, imagine metallica song with simple plan lyrics...hahaha

LOL..
well..it depends..
sometimes lyrics are not out to get your mind
as in you shouldn't be cracking your head trying to figure out what they mean..
but rather how you can apply that meaning to yourself...even though the guy who did the lyrics meant something else..

a good melody helps the mood too i guess...

i have always been a sucker for Leslie Low's lyrics...he may have meant bout somethin else..he may have wanted to express somethin else..
but well...certain questions in the songs that he posed..
jst gets me thinkin...

ok..lol..maybe i think too much.

Aye! Yes I have heard that cover. And I'll bet you got her LPC album from gramophone... didn't you! *points accusing finger* Hahaha.

I'm really, really surprised there's someone else in Singapore who actually listens to Ani D. She's great, I'd even used 'talented' to describe her.

She could've been bigger if she actually signed with one of the big record companies that were almost begging her to sign, but I'm happy she continued with her own - because then the ones who really appreciates her music will go all out to hear more. Rather than the mainstream followers who'd listen to whoever's... well, mainstream.

That's why her albums are so expensive. -_- No one buys them.

Cheers, agingyouth.

ps. I'm a dudette.
