DIY guitar kits and refinishing

hi there.. does anyone have any experience refinishing their own guitars??
on yer own without help from a shop i mean. living in a hdb definetly has its drawbacks
.
how abt making your own..... thinking of getting a building kit (body/neck)
and putting it on my own then try to do a finish on my own. been reading up on project guitar forums, but most of the active users are not from sg.
its either dat or i may have to look for a used beat up guitar for me to experiment.

A very useful source of information is www.reranch.com You can also look for books on wood refinishing at the local libraries.

Always practice on scrap to get a feel first though.
