?Distortion pedal?

I currently have a strat copy that sounds lacking in the bass... can I use a distortion pedal to boost it?

Comparing Ds1 to Marshall jackhammer... what's the diff?

Oh I'm currently using a Marshall mg15cdr...

Do you mean the distorted sound seems a bit thin to you??

Unfortunately the DS1 comes original with quite thin distortion sound too. Normally for small amp like yours, we would recommend a modded DS1 to Ultra specs for quite a major improvement in sound.

But for big amps, the SEM specs seem to give a warmer nicer tone. I can do either mod if you already have the DS1 pedal.

The distortion from my amp sound thin on the strat copy... so I thought of getting a distortion pedal... will that help?

But when use with my other humbucker guitar, it sounds fuller and fat... but when I turn the gain higher it is fuzzy and the sound kinda breaks... Is this so for all distortion?

I'm planning to use it for my humbucker guitar but afraid it will make my guitar sound very heavy cos the humbucker guitar have a good thick sound already?

Thanks mikeman for the input... but I don't have any distortion pedal at the moment.

That's why the single coil pickups on a strat are not meant for chugging heavy metal riffs. The output is more for the strat tone.

You might need to modify to humbucker PU or just learn to use the strat for different purpose.

OIC...

Haha... I'm glad I have a humbucker guitar too... anyway what to look for when getting a distortion pedal? Anyone uses the marshall jackhammer JH-1 b4?

Because the DS-1 can be modded for much better sound than a lot of other pedals. Also it's cheap to begin with, the brand and reputation is one major plus point.

So for a noob better to get the ds1 to play with rather than a jackhammer JH-1? Btw how come some distortion have both Overdrive and distortion option? Isn't it the same?

overdrive and distortion are generally the same... but there is a difference though.... overdrive isnt that distorted and heavy... correct me if i am wrong....

regarding the jh-1... its quite a good pedal actually... pretty basic and alright sounding.. its warmer as compared to the ds-1... if i am not mistaken... the price are almost similar... but as a rule of thumb, try both pedals first

to the distortion for ur strat copy... i have the same amp too... i do agree it sounds a bit thin... but mayb u can try to turn on the reverb to fatten the tone a little... thats what i am doing right now... even with humbuckers...

When I'm using my strat copy, I max out the bass nob and reduce the contour to about 4 and I also max the reverb....
By the way Slap_pop, what pedal and guitar u using?

Eh... when u try pedals u bring ur guitar along too or ask the sales person to test it for u? Sorry... if it sounds dumb cos I'm a newbie to guitar especially electric...

Normally you don't need to max out the reverb on most amp, some amp just 1/4 already too much. Reverb is also considered an effect, to give your guitar that hall echo sound. Too much will make the sound too watery.

Most metal or heavy riffing styles actually cut off the reverb totally or maybe just a little touch only. Metal soloing just put a touch only, normally people prefer to use delay effect.

Blues must have reverb to make the guitar sing more expressively.

Whoa... that's something new... thanks for the info... Ur the man!
Is it possible to play professionally without effects? haha...

Anyway was just wondering how much it cost to mod ds1?

There are plenty of guitar players who do not rely on any effects. There are also plenty of professional players who only swear by the overdrive that the amp comes with. you have to see what kind of music you are into.

Modding a DS-1 will cost $40 including the components. Quite a standard price out there. Can collect the same day. You need to buy a DS1 first, sometime you can get a used one cheap.

Ok I'll keep it in mind... haha... most likely I'll practise and save up first...

Thanks for all the replies bro...

Overdrive is actually clean sound, which is 'overdriven', set to high gain at high volume, thus the name 'overdrive', and its 'broken, heavy characteristics'.

Distortion, is rather cutting, enhancing and distorting of the sound itself, at an extreme level, thus, the heavy, distorted sound...

Yupz, like what mikemann said, Ds-1 is a good pedal for modding and stuff. There are tonnes of distortion pedals out there really, like the sansamp, the proco rat series, tubescreamers(TS-XXX) from Ibanez, Visual Sound's route 66 and jekyll hyde, and even Boss has a few to begin with.

Each has different characteristics, and something that's good for one, may not be another's. Thus, it is best if you try it yourself, and see whether it suits your type of music, and your wallet of course! =)

Well, there's also fuzz, which is a kind of distortion, unique in its own self, and quite interesting really...and yeah, i love the jekyll & hyde from Visual sound, but it takes a lot of patience to learn to love this dude...coz if you want to get the best out of both channels, you really gotta tweak it..

At the end of the day, it really comes down to your own personal choice. Some choose to invest in better pickups, for higher outputs/better tonal characteristics, while others spend their time GAS-ing.. and some lucky ones gets both!

definitely possible. the pic you see here is my setup- guitar + amp, no pedals... if you don't need a pedal, why force yourself to use one?

yes i am. are we excluded from owning a stack if we reside in an HDB unit? as long as we are responsible people, our neighbours wouldn't mind. my wife certainly doesn't mind... 8)

i prefer dist from head/amp as well..
just use additional ds-1 or overdrive to boost at times..

effects might use eq or delay in effect loop
thats all..

Whoa... Bro Sub ur amp is like 4 times mine and the nobs are countless...

The reason I'm looking for pedal is I want to try playing with it...cos if u play riff without some effects abit dull... I usually practise thru the clean channel but when it comes to distortion I feel that the amp a bit lacking...

I'm into a mild to mid range distortion like punk rock or any type of rock in fact... not those super heavy metal stuff... and I think the most suitable pedal out there would be the ds1 right?

By the way what's with multi-effects? Are they better than individual pedal? Anyone have experience using the korg Ax1500G?
