Distortion from amp or cleans plus distortion pedals

Hi all,

I love playing on cleans most of the time but on some occasions ill need to get modern sounding distortion out of my amp for my chemical romance and linkin park sounds.

Im planning on getting my first tube amp, probably a cheap one. Either a black heart little giant or a special 6 ultra.

Listened to most of the clips, both cleans and overdrives are not bad at all, however the ultra channel for the special 6 is not really speaking to me.

I have a pedal board now and my main distortion is a tube zone, beez modded ds-1 and a tubescreamer.

I dunno if this will suffice. Please advice.

Should i be looking elsewhere? the blackstar ht-5 is kinda out of my budget and the cleans are sterile.

Thank you very much.

Cheers.

P.S. i've read quite a bit trying to search for the answer. Got some mixed ans so what do the pros think?
I also live in a apartment so probably can't go anything above 5 watts.

even though you are considering to get another amp, what is your current amp?

anyway, sometimes if the tube amp isn't cranked loud enough, you might not be able to utilise it fully..

Hi all, thx for your replies.

The class 5 is rather expensive but I'll look into one.

My current amp is a Roland cube 20x. I'm buying a low wattage amp so it can be cranked but the pedal board should be able to help me achieve distorted sounds at low volumes right?

since you are looking for a modern sounding distortion, it might be better to save the money on the amp. In the end you would be relying on your pedals more, and the cube 20x should already be good enough.

unless you really want another amp =D

Agree with VidaK. Unless you're going to bring the amplifier everywhere you go, you'd be relying on your guitars and effects more as those are what you'll be bringing with you when you go jamming or do performances. Amplifiers will tend to be provided by the venues and studios. Hence, I'd say stick to a simple amplifier just for cleans, and concentrate your funds on your pedals and guitars, what I'd call your 'portable' portion of your rig.

@VidaK i really want a tube so i bought a little giant. The distortion from the cube does not speak to me.
@EugeneSmasher i'm searching for a good versatile high gain pedal now. I understand i have to shell out quite a bit, probably more than the amount i spent on my amp but im prepared when the good ones come.
