Dissection: Reinkaos
Jon Nodtveidt: Vocals/ Guitars
Set Teiten: Guitars
Tomas Asklund: Drums
It’s rather inevitable that the mention of Jon Nodtveidt/ Dissection would conjure the frontman’s criminal past. The purpose of this write-up isn’t about a recollection of his dark history; he has served his time & has moved on, so should we.
Many would deem Reinkaos as a come-back album of sort for the band (it’s 11 years in waiting), it is in a way but a resurrection of its past it is not. Nodtveidt being the surviving member of the prior line-up (he has to be, he’s the brainchild of this band) has inducted Set Teiten (ex-Aborym) & Tomas Asklund (ex-Dark Funeral) into the fold.
Ardent fans of The Somberlain & Storm of the Light’s Bane will find this release a sheer disappointment. The band has chosen to drop a few notches down in terms of tempo, gone too are the essence of black metal which made the aforementioned releases thoroughly enjoyable in terms of aural assault. In fact, this reviewer is bent on dismissing Reinkaos as an In Flames knock-off, whipped into sluggish submission. However, listeners are to measure up this release in light of Nodtveidt’s revised philosophy which embraces Chaos Gnosticism & has diminished association with clouded savagery. In tandem with this ideal, fellow members, Teiten & Tomas, have to manifest their capacities accordingly. It’s an exercise in restraint, culminating in a geared attainment of heaviness.
Hardcore fans would agree that Dissection took a turn for the unexpected (with this release) but this very camp are the believers who would support Nodveidt’s revised cause. It is a worthy release nevertheless, on hindsight, the band would win new fans along the way. Losing the rest is inexorable.
