Cymbals For Church

ennoying

New member
just wanted feedback from drummmzer who play for church and what their cymbal setups are.

we use 16" and 18" Zildjian K Dark Crashes with 14" A Custom Hi-Hats and 20" Projection Ride.

other setup include 14" HHX Groove Hats, 16" HHX and 17" Evo cashes and 20" Zildjian A Custom Ping Ride.

what do you think works best for your and your style of worship?

We use:

10" Avedis Splash
14" New Beat hats
16" Avedis Medium Thin Crash
20" K Jazz Ride

I think the whole set's more than 15 years old. Think the New Beats work really well, these are probably the most versatile hats ever.

The K kinda washes out too much when you really lay into it for the more upbeat pop/rock songs. Beautiful for lower volume stuff.

Splash and crash are pretty okay, but not as sensitive/responsive as I'd like them to be. I can see HHXs working really well as our hall's pretty small.

Our church use

14" HH Regular hats
16" HHXplosion crash
18" AAXplosion crash
20" HH Medium Ride
10" HH Splash
14" Istanbul Agop Dark Crash
18" HH China

LIke the set up alot. Crashes are in between warm and bright, good for rock beat songs which most songs are at the moment. Ride's very sweet sounding. To me the HH range of splash are one of the best i've heard. I've got the 6, 8, and 10 HH Splashes. warm piercing with enough sustain.

I use

14' A custom hats
8' A custom splash
16' Bosphorus Traditional MT crash
16' K custom session crash
22' K custom Medium Ride
14' K Mini China or 18' Avedis China boy low

I LURVE my ride!!! It opens up just fine. The Bosphorus crash is super versatile. Just like what the company claims, it can be used for loud rock stuff to jazz. Great for crescendos too. The 14' K mini china's not too bad, but after trying my friend's 19' K china, I wish I had the latter.

Looking to get myself a 16' ozone or the new A custom efx. If anyone's letting go of their ozone crash, do let me know :)

ennoying: how does the 18" K Dark Crashes compared to K Custom Dark Crash? because i have the K Custom and eyeing for K Dark Crash..

doublestrokesg: hows the K Custom Medium Ride? dont u feel its too heavy for Jazz playing?

Kari: I use the Medium Ride mostly for church stuff. I have another 20' bosphorus masters ride which I practice jazz stuff on. However I must subscribe to what my teach told me, although it's abt application, try not to be too dependant on the gear. Like he could use my 22' K and still make it sound gd and relevant to jazz. :)

Joshie: I'm from Victory Family Center. How abt yourself?

I use a

14 K Custom Dark Hi Hat Top
14 A New Beat Hi Hat Bottom
16 K Custom Session Crash
8 A Custom Splash
18 K Custom Dark Crash (as my ride)
17 K Custom Dark Crash

Kari : my mistake.. we have K Custom Dark Crashes. My resident drummer tells me that the 16" and 18" are perfect for church... anything bigger is too much and anything smaller has not enough sustain. We have a 15" which he also uses for a fast crash.

we're from Zion Praise Harvest, Perth!

my local church is Boscombe Life Church @ Joo Chiat

haiz.. you guys got really nice set ups... if only my church would be willing to spend the money...

darn

reuben: I totally get what you mean! But I guess there are more pressing needs as to how they spend their budget, such as local and overseas missions work that generally need more funding. I mean, tt's like spreading the Gospel. Compared to the music, tt's got to be more impt. So no choice, music budget kenna cut. At least it's like tt for my church.

On the flip side, you can save up to get your own cymbals, plus you'd be familiar with what sounds are in your setup. Can play anywhere and still feel comfy. I really treasure my cymbals cos they're bought with money tt's mingled with 'blood, sweat and tears' :)

Yeah bro, don't feel sian. Most of the cymbals I bought, I got with the intention of using in service actually, to (hopefully) produce better music and worship for Him. So if there are other priorities for the church funds, nobody else cares, nobody else is willing, there's always you

But down to it, it's always the heart behind it. If you're sincere, I'm sure air drumming will be pleasing to Him too.

yeap... i tot of getting electronic set for the church... i think its a good idea since majorly the purpose is for the youths... and the youth room isnt very big...

must start pooling money together

Reuben: Which church are u from bro?

Seth: Is tt the setup from touch marine parade, bukit merah, or expo? Man, I liked your church's dw kit at touch marine parade!

hey bro!

My church rented a place for 2 years and we used the Pacific Camerlieon Kit as it was small, easy to move and store PLUS sounds awesome with a couple of pin-stripes on them and the EMAD!!! Great for youth camps too!

As for spending on cymbals I feel its great to invest in your own cymbals and bless the church with them. Like a guitarist and his/her pedals, its good to invest in our sound! Most of our cymbals in Perth are owned by the drummers... even the drum kit!

God Bless!

doublestrokesg: erm.. i'm refering to the pearl drum masters @ expo.. i'll post bout the bukit merah and marine parade ones when i get to confirm the cymbals there.. i can remember roughly la.. but not too sure.. haha...

oh..i am from bukit batok presbyterian.. not any of those mega churches... just a tiny church round the corner... not many drummers there though.. all entry level i spose..

thing is since we are a branch of orchard pres(the white churh beside park mall) alot of our stuff has to be approved by them... to get the drumset in was already a mega hassle... we got two somemore... cymbals are really crap now... want to buy but no money oso.. still studying mah
