not sure if this sort of thing has been discussed before on this forum so i'll ask anyway.

i've been trying to play covers since i picked up the guitar cos i had no idea how to move foward. but now after starting guitar classes do i actually realise what i've been missing out. i think i've read somewhere in this forum before that playing covers is a good start, but then now it makes me wonder, if a guy picks up a guitar and learns to play cover after cover, but in the end still does not know how to invent an original solo or does not have any knowledge about any music theory, what good does that make? ok i know its abit extreme an example but just wanted to know what u guys think. is playing covers a good way to learn?

the way i see it, covers are a way to explore different methods of playing the guitar. i don't see why a person can't write original pieces just beacause he plays alot of covers

yeap, playing covers are a good way to get urself more intersted in guitar, for me, ive been in band after band and didnt really have enough time to learn theory.. so i just kinda figured out all the little stuff and techniques while covering songs, and kinda get to know more about playing technique of the artist u are covering.. yeah.. but it is also a good way to learn abit of theory before jumping into covers cause if u learn something wrongly, u might end up having a bad habit.. like most people and myself have.. the pinky problem..we always end up playing guitar without the pinky cause we are used to it .. now i still find it hard to use the pinky but im still working on it..

yeah.. it is good to jump into covers.. but at least have abit of theory first..
like the main chords, how to palm mute, how to strum, and always use ur pinky if its necessary, dont take the easy way out and use ur other fingers

the reason we learn guitar initially is to play our fave songs ma...if u can play a good cover...u can try learning scales...so u can compare the scales with the solos u r learning...for instance, slash is playing blues, so u might wanna compare his solos wif a blues scale and try to mod it to be ur original..or play diff notes on the scales to make up ur own solo lo...tat's wat i roughly think
