Cort Guitars.

Hi there!
Uhm i have a question about my guitar.
It's a Cort strat-copy which i bought at swee lee around June '09.
I'm not too sure about the model because it's not listed on their website anymore.
(or at least i can't find it) if i'm not wrong it cost around 280$-300$
The headstock says it's made in indonesia.
Well basically, it was my first guitar & I've 'grown out' of it.
The pickup poles are rusty & the output jack is faulty & one of the tuners is sticking out of the hole a bit.
I tried with my friend's cable & amp with the same cutting-off-when-at-certain-angle effect.
I was figuring if it was worth to change the output jack completely. (does it cost a lot?)
& if i changed say, the pickups & output jack & tuners, would it sound like a completely new guitar?
Or will the 'inferior quality' wood/other parts cause it to sound dull still. :/
All opinions & experienced professionals' advice are welcomed. thank you. :)

As you go through your journey of GAS, you will soon realise that 70% of tone comes from your amp. But this thread is not about this, so I will not go there.
Changing the jack will cost you about $15-$20 at Sound Alchemy. What you are doing is basically what I did to my old Ibanez Gio to really spice it up and make it sound loads better. A pickup change will definitely help, doesn't have to be anything too expensive, if you're on a budget Teslas will do just fine, but if you have more money to spend, go for SDs, Dimarzios, or whatever you want.

For machine heads, I bought a set of Sperzel Locking Tuners for a mere $65, good investment. But do take notice that the machine heads are staggered, so you must place them in the right order, in terms of height.

Another thing you might want to consider is to change the nut of your guitar, really helps with the tone as well. I would recommend one of the Graphtech Tusq nuts, if i'm not wrong Maestro brings them in.

There are many other things to change as well, if your guitar has a trem, the trem block, pots etc. But be prepared that you will spend more on upgrades than your guitar if you're prepared to go for the full upgrade.

@metalfreak haha thank you for the suggestion. :) it seems like SD's are really THE pickups to get, as many people ive asked, mainly my friends and a cousin, suggested them too. but to be specific, any particular model to recommend? along with information on which shops deal them. greatly appreciated. :D

@J.custom haha yes indeed the amp issue is the main factor. however i was just thinking more of just an 'upgrading' of my guitar first, then when i'm more ready, i'd go ahead & buy myself an amp that suits me & my needs best. :) thank you for all the info. I'll definitely go around & try out some of these pickups personally. & as for the machine heads, do i have to take any particular measurements? & if i do, is it alright if i take them myself? Thank you for all the info man. :D really appreciate it.

are the frets all aligned? sometimes with entry level guitars you can tell that the workmanship ain't all that good. If the fretboard ain't glued straight, the frets are buzzing at certain frets but higher there's no problem, basically if anything feels wrong the playability of the guitar I suggest you invest more in a new guitar. However, if it's a comfortable guitar, and knowing cort, they do make good entry level guitars i'd do what J.custom did. It's really a pretty cool thing to do... i have no money to mod my car so i mod the guitars and it feels like a visual orgasm every time i look at it. secondly, it would definitely sound much better.

and if you do change your pups and you're still not happy with the guitar you could always keep the spare parts and put them on the next guitar.

@kevinweeeeeeeee, don't go only for what people tell u. I bought SDs to put on my Gibson (JB/Jazz set) and I'm replacing them now with EMGs. Now please don't read this as "SD suck". I'm not a kid so I don't go ard bashing on stuff willy-nilly. They sound beautiful clean, but didn't impress me when distorted, not bad just not what I like, and that's my taste, others might have their own.

If u can try or listen to as many pickups as u can and go for the one u prefer.

Also, while I agree that the amp has a big impact on tone (dunno what %, never did an analysis on that :)) I don't think you should bother making big investments, like a bone nut, on an entry level guitar!!
Eventually you will buy a better guitar, and while pups can be transfered easily, the same can not be said of a bone nut.

just my 2c

My take. Never saw the point in putting in so much money into an entry level guitar.

You do make it sound like the guitar has served it's due for you (although honestly speaking '09 isn't that long ago). In the long run if you are bent on a better guitar, do that, save up and invest in a proper tool for the art. In the long run, once again, it will be a better investment for your betterment and satisfaction.

It's a very personal opinion of course.

For the immediate future, I say just have it set up by a professional, some elbow grease and TLC to take the grime and rust out and you'd be fine for a while until u gather enough buck for a new instrument.

@AaronSoFat well besides the output jack, the machine heads & the rusty pups. the rest of the parts are pretty much playable. haha not the best i've seen (comparing to some Fender's i've played) but yeah, playable. the frets are as i like them (probably also because i've gotten used to it) with all these comments & recommendations, i'm starting to lean towards saving up for a whole new guitar & amp. thank you! haha :)

@metalfreak haha cool. although i don't think the distortion part would affect me much. since i don't really dig into the rock territory much. only on certain occasions, or when i have a sudden urge to play a little soft rock. but yeah, i guess i have to try as much as i can to be able to settle on what suits me best. anyway how much does a bone nut cost? o.o & thank you. :)

@skipper53 thank you. :) your advice is really very logical, i guess that i definitely could wait. save up to get myself an awesome telecaster (love 'em) haha. & yeah, like you said, in the long run, it'll be a better investment. & a set-up should be under way in the near future, perhaps this June holidays.

Since we are on Cort

I just bought a Z-Custom from Swee Lee

I am confused when i checked on the Cort website as it said this model is supposed to be made in Indonesia.

The one that I bought has got a serial number and it says made in korea, but I cant find anything on the net on this. And the headstock logo is not a standard cort, but a letter C and looks like an 'e'

Anyone got an idea what did I buy? haha :confused:

BTW where can I get the sperzel locking tuners installed? and roughly how much would it cost?

sperzel's are quite expensive.. if i'm not wrong they're around a 100 for the locking ones. installing it would be cheap. can just get the parts and install it anywhere. not sure where to get it in SG though. thought i saw them at zen guitars

oh and i used to have the planetwaves locking tuners. costed me only 60 bucks from davis. pretty good. but ain't the standard of a sperzel locking tuner. could try them out

I really dont know what I bought, hope it all works out.

@klatzz
hey i believe that that seems pretty legit. (referring to the e-looking C)
mine kind of has that too. but mine's the full word 'Cort' but the C does look like an e exactly like yours so don't worry.
but as for the non-locking tuners, i'm not too sure because i don't have that particular model.
perhaps you could chance upon someone with that exact same model and ask them?
wish you luck. :)

Man i almost got that Cort 2 weeks ago! Luckily I settle for an Ibanez RGR321EX :) btw why did you buy the guitar without reading reviews online and checking out more about it?

I read more in depth after I bought.

anyway I buy it because of the tone and feel of the guitar, quite solid and there is coil tap. haha

is that a big problem? its because of the bridge slanted, thats y...

the neck pickups are aligned but bridge is slightly off for 3 strings..
