i just bought my first guitar. i dunno how to play anything so now what should i do? my guitar is a epi Sg standard btw.

sp your telling me you just bought a guitar and you dont even know how to play?

hmm,
learning basic chord progressions..
learn a few simple songs.
dont just strum away without actually knowing what is it that your playing and the chord your holding.

and you can always look out for tutorial videos on the net.

i hope you bought yourself an amp.

Learn the chords from A to G and back again and practise until you can remember them by heart.

Then move to bar chords!

Then move to picking and simple riffs.

Or simply, just go sign up for a course

Your options:
1. Google "free guitar lessons". Go on from there.
2. Search for teachers here in soft. There are lots of good ones here.
3. Go to the library to borrow books/videos on playing the guitar - there are tons.
4. Go to youtube and search for free lesson vids.
5. Get a friend who's good on the guitar to start you off.

Pls note the options are not mutually exclusive ie you can take up a few of them at the same time.

got any songs for me to learn?

start with the most basic like Jingle bells those one note by one note plucking then try strumming some basic chords. Slowly progress to barchords then when you are ready with to play with ur amps O/D learn the Powerchords b4 u do soo. then once u know powerchords u can play simple songs like for example Greenday or Sum41 old stuffs then u should know what to do after that like getting a pedal etc. Soo the first step is to get the basic right

i bought a package deal and it comes with an amp...

my friend asked me to play hell song by sum41 without the solo.. how in the world am i going to play it =.=??

btw i like songs by sum41, green day and Linkin Park.

i wouldn't suggest learning how to play songs just yet till you've at least got the basic foundation and techniques down first.. as the other softies have mentioned before, i would suggest either searching up lessons or tutors, or engaging the help of a friend.. starting off without knowing what you're doing could lead to bad habits which you'll find difficult to rid yourself of in future..

If you like green day, can try learning some chords first.

Play rhythmn, recommendation would be boulevard of broken dreams.

If you're serious about learning, probably it'll be best to get someone to teach you a little on the basics first. But nothing beats lotsa practice.

i have to agree with Jiterator on this.
whats the point of playing something that you dont fully comprehend?
its what i like to call a 'blind' musician.

wow you have an epiphone les paul without even having known the fundamentals of music?
you have a great platform to carry on your studies in music there.i used to have a stupid guitar that sucks balls.

and now im still a noob.cheers!

You've got a few choices:
1) Go online find guitar lessons
What you can start with is:
- Basics of a guitar (the parts, the tuning, etc)
- Learn to play some open chords like D, A, G, etc.
- Sing along any playable songs
(my first song was Zombie by Cranberries...very easy to play:
Top four strings only: Em//// C//// G//// D////) hehe~

2) Get a intermediate-and-abovely skilled friend or schoolmates or workmate to teach you. Then persevere in practising.

3) Pay $$ engaged a guitar teacher. This also show your serious-ness :X
Coz honestly, i hate to teach my friends who just "eh teach me ley" and then forget about it or stop after 1-2 lessons. This is just wannabe or 3min attitude which I think is undesirable. If you wanna do it, do it till at least you can play rhythmic guitar well. :)

Well, there's always a 4th and 5th choice....
4th - Put in storeroom (stupidest thing to do, must as well give away)
5th - sell lor~

2cents :X

I think what's important is getting your technique down.

I was told that it's not necessary to learn 823681317301 songs at first unless you're performing la. I think it's useful to pick a few songs you like and work on it, especially different songs that make use of different techniques (bending, hammer on/off, tapping, strumming..etc)

If you're confident with technique and have your foundation, you can play anything else lol

Good luck, and never give up :D

a simple song that lets u do normal picking, alternate picking, strumming and soloing would be Wonderful tonight by Eric Clapton. usually there's no strumming. but the verse part is a picking chord. u can strum that part also.

its up to u how u wanna learn guitar. i learnt songs first. first song was master of puppets 4 years ago but i didnt know chords till early this year.

got ur guitar? first step would be knowing the terms. like chords and picking.
chords can be easily learnt by looking at chord tables. just picture search "chord chart".

Apparently, Wake me up when september ends seems to be on the list of "first song i learnt" for alot of people. Along tears in heaven and more than words.

Since you're a Greenday fan, Try learning songs like Good riddance (time if your life), Boulevard of broken dreams (acoustic), Give me Novocaine these songs give you a basic idea of simple chord progressions.
After that, maybe move on to something slightly harder like Basketcase or Brainstew. Where you'll be introduced to the world of powerchords which Greenday uses quite abit.

Are you a blink fan? Most of their songs are pretty simple too. :) Dammit, All the small things are a few to name:)
