compressor?

hi..could you explain to me what a compressor does? and under what conditions should i get it for my bass, or is it generally a good thing to have?
 
basically.. it does what it says it does.. it compresses your notes so that each note is at the same level (i.e. same volume) so that no note overwhelms the other.. so essentially making rhythmn playing more balanced

the compressor also adds sustain to your notes as well :)
 
i guess quite a lot of big bass in amps in jamming studios comes wif in-built compressor as far as i noticed.

in fact, in quite most of the bass effects equipment like pedals, i do see compressor function commonly there.

i beg to differ,most of it dont have a compressor i think
