Hi guys,

I own a cheap classical guitar i bought years ago for $80. Now i'm looking for an upgrade to a classical guitar. Any recommendations? anyone owns a maestro or a CORT CEC-5?

I was actually looking at some acoustic guitars as well (wanted to get a custom acoustic), but will they be good for fingerpicking?

Sorry, quite a noob here so a lot of entry level questions lol

Thanks guys!

[FONT=Tahoma, Calibri, Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif]No worries mate, we're all fellow learners on this journey. Sounds like you want a classical with a pickup; you intending to gig/record with your intended purchase?

For acoustics, there are a few types "supposed" to be better for fingerpicking like a grand (more depth here at http://www.taylorguitars.com/guitars/features/shapes/). I say "supposed" because there are incredible fingerpickers who play with dreadnoughts (the "strumming" guitar) like Tommy Emmanuel.

A fingerpicking acoustic guitar should have a balanced tone and not too bright, deeper dynamic range and depth to play both intricately and aggressively. Some acoustics I've played before are so jangly that their tone is best described as a shaker with some melodic content, which is fine for cutting through the mix in a band situation.

well i actually don't need a pickup

i'm kinda into playing video game music, so that, to me, seems to fall into the classical guitar categroy.

but i also want to strum and play some chords to sing along

would an acoustic be better for me?

thanks peeps

hmm do you subscribe to ionionjp? :D

well it depends really, for classical guitars you'll be able to squeeze out more tone and emotion with your right hand, to give a palette of sounds you can play around with

for acoustic guitars, they are more suited for strumming and sing-along though

thus, you have to make a choice which type of music you wanna pursue (not that its a zero-sum decision, you'll still be able to do both, just that one will suffer slightly)

one day, you'll give in to GAS and buy both, then rinse and repeat and you'll be amazed on how much youre spending on guitars hehe...

I do listen to a lot of ionionjp's videos! If only I could play like him tho!

I thin I'm gonna go with an acoustic one first, and use my 80 bucks asahi guitar in the meantime until another urge for a new guitar arises!

haha good choice if you ask me, cos strumming on a classical guitar is worse than playing a melody on an acoustic i feel

well then invest wisely in a decent acoustic guitar then

Now I've another question! I went to city music and saw custom acoustic FG27E, but took a liking to its OM version, FG3QCE. According to what I read, OM guitar's are supposed to be more balance in the bass and high tones?

Also wanted to check out other brands, does takamine come in OM models around 300-400 bucks? Or should I even be so insistent on an OM model?

always go by the price vs specs comparison to know which is the best deal. after you have narrowed down the search, try them all out to see if you bond well with the feel.

always be open to suggestions. sometimes cheap guitars can blow you away.
