Changing 3 strings only

Hi, if only my G, B and E strings are rusty, can I just change them, or do i have to change the whole set? Also, will anything happen to the guitar?

You can change them if you want, nothing will happen to the guitar. But,the new strings will sound very bright and your old strings wont be as bright, which is quite weird. Its totally up to you.

strings should be changed after the tone dies and not when the strings become super rusty and unusable.

if you think changing strings are too expensive, try applying some FastFret.

Change them all

The tone will be unbalanced if you only change a few. It will be especially noticeable when you play clean through an amp.

Yes this is very very true. Totally agree.

And I also notice that for normal(non-treated I think) strings like ernie ball and dunlop, if you play them too much till the slinky, smooth feeling of the string is gone, rust starts to appear(maybe develop) really fast even though I'm done wiping and applying string conditioner.

i've read that for every change of the bass side (EAD) strings, the treble side(GBE) can be changed twice if they are starting to rust. makes sense to me, the treble side does rust quicker.
