thanks loads.

If you ask me whats basic for me, I'll say an OD, a dist and a wah. Thats it. Its hard to say what YOU need... IMO, no need for chorus.. but for you, you know you need it.

Why don't you tell us the music you want to play? Thats a good way to start?

Also, before you start, word of advise... You WILL WILL WILL want EVERY effect out there... because its better, more sturdy, blah blah... its a lot of GAS, a lot of temptation... Please think things carefully... sleep over it... dont' end up with lots of purchases only to hold a garage sale in 2 mths...

I think the only kind of pedalboards Swee Lee might stock are the Boss ones and I would recommend against it unless you're really sure that you'll only be using Boss pedals. Mr. Misse http://www.mrmisse.com/ and the Wake Me Up Shop sell pedalboard cases but I'm not sure about stock, best to phone and ask. Another thing you might want to think about is powering it from a wall wart instead of using batteries but thank goodness now we have units like the 1-sopt to take care of it instead of having to run around finding adaptors with enough ampage.

Regarding the pedals, as above, best to give us an idea of what genre(s) you play.

Jus my two cents worth, I dunno what kinda music you're into, but I think the basis in acheiving a good rock sound(if that's what you're into) is having a distortion, a chorus and a delay. Other than that is jus jus adding toppings to the sound, kinda like giving "character" to your sound.

Hi Khai,
dun think u r missing out on any particular effect. a particular genre of music shouldn't be matched with specific pedals, but personally i find, it should be who your guitar heroes are.

for example, if u r into U2, a delay would essential.

like for me, i love van halen, so a phaser is an essential element in my rig 8)

khai_stereotype, it doesn't matter what music you play lah. What you want on your board is entirely up to you. How you want to line them up is also up to you. As long as you are happy...

You can have this...

Or maybe an army of moderately trained monkeys.

The monkeys are already busy carrying these

bro... where's the fricken distortion pedal bro???? how to shred without a distortion pedal bro???  from zakkwylde site some more... sighs.

anyway to the thread starter. Only you will know what you need for your music. If you were to ask me I'd probably tell you my dream pedalboard.... wait... i've got already more than what i need.

AND! if you're not even sure now what pedals you need, please don't get a pedalboard now. Play around until you're confortable with your setup then shop around for a pedalboard. Cos there's always a pedalboard too small for that one last pedal thats essential or you'll be sick of lugging along a pedal board that too damn big with only 3 essential pedals on it.

to put in perspective, the more pedals you have, the more time you'll be spending on tweaking them instead of playing your guitar.

it's a cost-benefit choice. do rationalize a bit and not go ga-ga with pedal acquistion. decide what kind of sound/tone you want - tone from pedals, or from technique? or a mix of both.

heh heh.... not everyone likes to play "traditional" guitar. :D

but i guess you're right. khai_stereotype should be a "traditional" guitar player.

hehe, if having more knobs to turn affect guitar playing time, i say we all give up guitar playing and turn knobs instead of playing guitar and sound like every other guitar players for the past 40yrs or so

have fun, play music, turn knobs, strum guitar, no right, no wrong, only knowing what is wanted...

haha... brundisium, i think u know what i mean... :p

anyway, getting a pedal isn't simply about turning knobs. u do need to know how the pedal works throughout your whole chain, from the guitar to other effects to the amp. u might need to re-set other pedals and amps to fit guitar settings.

if you use pedals for solos, you need to remember which pedal(s) to press to get the correct sound on different songs.

i'll share my own experience here. i used to change a lot and work with 4 or 5 pedals, running clean rhythm, then distorted boosted solos with chorus. it did get to me a point where i felt i spent way too much time figuring things out, and having pedals which i eventually didn't use most of the time. and the pedals never worked well with different jam studio amps..i could spend 20 minutes just adjusting settings for a proper sound. (ok, maybe i'm just slow and dumb.)

anyway i think edder is spot on about the pedalboard thing. i think most people should find out really how many pedals they need before getting a pedalboard. otherwise, it's like chasing air - elusive and futile.

Wait till you start finding tone from amps, then you know whats it's all about. Collecting actual amps is the ultimate pursuit for tone. Build that wall of sound!!!
