Cajon Recommendations, anyone?

Hello Fellow Softies!

I'm pretty new to the percussion scene, hence I need some input about one very special percussion instrument - The Cajon.

I am currently setting up a mini "home" studio in my room, and I'll be going into acoustic music. I might want to complete the whole acoustic feel in my songs with some percussion. And from countless videos that I've seen on Youtube as well some some posts that I've read about on the net, I find that Cajons will be the most suitable.

Hence, I would like to ask you guys out here, what are the things that I should look out for when purchasing Cajons? I've been to places like Swee Lee, Ranking Sports & Music, and also Music Theme and listened to how Cajons sound and all, but I have no idea what to look out for and thus, they all sound pretty similar to me, with the exception of some having the snare and some having a richer bass and all.

Appreciate all the help I can get! :D

Oh pal, u just missed the swee lee sales at sims drive, i find meinl cajons, in terms of pricing and usability, they are excellent, meinl cajons are made in mexico, whereas other brands like latin percussion is made in thailand iirc :)

Oh hahaha yea i know about that sale! But I don't wanna get something just cause' its cheap and all... So I wanna gather all the info i can get haha :D

Yea I know if Meinl! Most of the Youtube artistes (eg Boyce Avenue, Alex Goot) that I've seen use Meinl! But there are sooo many different models and they all sound pretty much the same to me! :p

Its all down to your budget, for the start, during a yr end sale, the string cajon is selling at around $200 first hand, for a better one, go for the snare cajon or pedal cajon, which are award winning ones :) And the cajon market is quite limited, basically for certain budget, u could get certain models or certain ranges, i would never recommend ppl to waste $200 on a carlos cajon :)

Cajon for sale

Hi,

I would definitely recommend a Meinl Cajon. I have one, and I'm planning to sell it. Bought originally from swee lee at around $530 if i rmb correctly (bought the cajon and a Pearl travel bag from there as well). If u are interested, I don't mind selling the cajon and the travel bag to you (since u seem interested in cajon music). Leave me a PM and keep me in contact. Will provide u more details and pictures if u want.

Like the rest, Meinl Cajon! Even though I'm not a percussionist, my music teacher bought one and it sounded pretty good!

Hi all, sorry to bring this thread back up.

Just wondering, whats the difference between the string cajon, pedal cajon and snare cajon?

Which are the more bang-for-buck cajon brands, and which are the more recognised (i.e. trustable) cajon brands?
And assuming budget is not an issue, what do you look for when purchasing a cajon? (E.g. Wood type, size, sound? etc...)
