hey trance, i recently went to the new National Library and also the Esplanade library. Esplanade library have all the resources for the arts/music, and i borrowed a number of guitar related original tablatures, how to set up your instruments, techniques etc. Came across loads (i mean LOADS) of books, such as Drumming for Dummies, advanced drummings, and many others that will aid you in many ways. Check out the library at Esplanade first, you'll find yourself staying there for hours.. :)

thanks guys.. anyway watz da stick control bk abt? jus stick control? or wif rudiments n stuff to aid mi in my drumming...
i've read da drumming for dummies bk b4 n found it kinda useless... didnt finish reading da whole bk though...

The book contains lotsa gd stuff that leads to a build up of proper control in one's strokes. And you said it... It contains rudiments in the form of single beat combinations, triplets, as well as some in 6/8, 2/4, that is to be played, as prescribed by the author, for 20 bars continously per exercise variation. It really does yield results!

An excerpt from the book reads, 'Practise at all times with relaxed muscles, stopping at the slightest feeling of tension. Remember, the rhythms in 'Stick Control' are 'conditioners'. They are designed to give control. Control begins in muscularly relaxed action.'

You can try Mel Bay's Complete Modern Drumset by Frank Briggs. From basic to advance and it has dvd/vcd as well.

Stick Control by George Lawrence Stone

Hey there wired, do you know how much will this book cost ? I'm thinking of getting it since it's so highly reccomended by you. Haha. :D

Hey guys, regarding the Stick Control book. I personally understand how hard it is to find the book, which I why I don't have it but rather, a photocopied version filed nicely in a plastic file (makes it easier to read off a music stand too :lol).

I'm looking for the book too, so maybe someone who lives close to centerpoint can go check out the book stores for us? :D

Otherwise, maybe Nigel can bring in the books for us?

It's a good book, no worries about that, I can scan in some exercises if you guys want to take a look at them. It's essentially just 40+ pages full of exercises, not much words or instructions, just exercises after exercises. :D

Opps, my scanner isn't working so I used my digital camera instead. So well, excuse the quality, I tried my best to make the stuff as readable as possible though.

Anyway, here are 2 pages (linked as they are large images)

Triplet exercises:

One of my favourite set of exercises, single beat combinations:

Like what doublestrokesg has mentioned, the author recommends that you practice each exercise 20 times before moving on to the next one. And also playing them to a metronome, and without a metronome in a open-close-open fashion (start off slow, gradually get faster and stay at your peak speed and bring it down again), and of course, practice them at all dynamic levels. Then apply them to the drumset! :D

Heh, that's some pretty good excercises. I'd start practising with the two links you gave. :D

I sure hope Nigel would bring in the books for us. I'll definately grab a copy!

the mel bay bk is seriously gd, the copy i got is from ah pek. some of the excercises u need someone to show u though like the shuffle and second line rhythms.
