what is the difference in bolt-on neck and a thru neck?
any diffeerence in the sound or playability??

thanks

.

a neck thru supposedly has more sustain than a bolt on. i think there're plenty of these debates around the guitar forums...

A neck thru usually allows for better upper fret access, far better than famous bolt-ons like fenders, but companies like ibanez have the all access neck joint to aid the upper fret access in many of their guitars.

As for sustain, it really depends on your set up.

Difference is obviously in the price. Sound and playability is highly subjective to who is playing it.

Actually I think you meant "Set neck" as found in lespauls. Neck thru is found mainly in more exotic guitars.

Bolt on - removable easy, modifiable, changable

Set neck - characteristic is neck permanent glued or 'set' to the body, difficult if not immposible to replace to another one

Neck thru - the wood runs thru from the neck to the bottom of body, forget about replacement

Tone and sustain vary between them, subjective.
