Bass string sounding

My bass string gauge i am using nw is 45,60,80,100.
i want to have a more loose and crunchy tone for it, is it possible to get a different gauge to make tht tone?
if so, wad gauge should it be?

what brand of strings are you using now? i feel that brand has a bigger difference in tone than different gauges in the same brand. the gauge is more for feel and bass response but overall flavour of the sound is in the brands and types rather than gauge.

agree with tim

i almost killed my fingers trying the 45-100 gauge but find it on the whole not much diff from a 40-95. it's supposed to have that extra "oomph" in the lows, but not much diff to me.

i used to use daddario prism strings. it has the bright but not so bright tone to it... quite shiok. i heard it's out of production... is it? cos the last time i went sweelee, they ran out of .40s... and i'll never go beyond .40 ever again

prism? u talkin abt the black packaging with the colourful prism logo on it? i think i saw it in yamaha about half a year ago. the one at tampines mall. not so sure if they still have it. can call and check. i tried it once, ya quite nice, but .40 not suitable for my playin style. i tend to whack my strings pretty hard, lol. i use .45, just nice for me =)

ernie ball, the package is pink in colour, it says super slinky.
is there any brands u guys would recommend me?
what do you find lacking with those strings? are they nickel or stainless steel?
the problem with ernie ball for most people is that the strings come out very bright but die quite fast. i personally liked the dead ernies for my soundgear.

your description of the sound you want is pretty shady. do you want a deeper sound? do you find the sound like too punchy or what?

i use 45-105. that's the way bass strings should feel man

amnesiac: yea! those are the ones! din noe yamaha carried 'em.. shall go check it out.

jsut for the kick of it... does anyone use .35s here?

not sure abt the original string gauges, but the most common ones i see are .45 or .40

.35 ah? hmmm never seen it before haha

well i dont know much abt bass or sttrings, i dont really understand u guys saying tht it has a 'bright sound'. but lets just say tht theres one point where u said tht the string sounds die out fast, when i first brought the strings, there was this nice sound, i seriously cant explain it, maybe its wad u guys call a bright sound. it might be the sound tht i want

hmm... maybe you can describe the type of music you play? loose and crunchy... impression i get is maybe something from falloutboy or any punk band?
