i'd go for the sx. read many favourable reviews on talkbass forums
which one is that ?
no offence bro
cos like tt time i went down to help a fren try out the Sx jazz bass package.
sound / tone wise and balance : . generally pretty similar to the craftsman jazz bass in terms of tone. the Sx jazz bass is somewhat mellower to a certain extent and but lacks a warmth to the sound. the sound is deep but not the clear deep booming deep voice expected of an jazz bass, thin on the treble side as well. tonally it seems pretty good , rounded pretty deep comfortable tone, abit lacking on the warm side but i suppose might be the amp included in the package, looks a little small - no tweeter? - generally very comfortable to play ( in terms of balance) and classic jazz bass layout and size.
neck : dry and very poorly finished. not smooth to play on the bass. neck feels slightly larger than the standard jazz bass neck and the nut at the top of the neck is sharp (a REAL sin and a major pain in the ass) and keeps pricking your finger. major downer on this bass. i was thinking , man .. this bass plays really bad , the neck proportion isnt say very uncomfortable to play or too wide, its slim enough to play quick , pretty great grip on it but the finish was the killer. it killed my opinion of the bass , very dry , nearly non-existent finish on the neck made it very rough and very bad to play. it not only hinders you from fast fret to fret transition changes, when attempting to slide along it = total nightmare. i suspect bad QC at Sx is to blame as the neck feels like if its had just one light coating of finish . giving it a very rough and dry neck, killing off the playability of the entire bass.
overall build quality : decent. everything seems to be in order. generally pretty solid and somewhat lightweight body , not sure if its alder or agathis , agathis i think . lighter than alder .
recommendation : not worth it. looks good , sounds decent. plays bad
