My friends wants to start playing bass... he is wondering which kind of bass sounds good when he play rock stuff & funk stuff....

Hmm. A very wide range. Any sounds of any bass player he likes?
I assume he likes the mid heavy sound of modern rock?
For funk, he would be playing slap and pops?
So firstly, we rule out any bass that is too muddy or too warm.
Something with more growl and punch?

Secondly, his budget.
He wants just a bass? Or an amp too?
He wants to play fingerstyle? Or with a pick?
For rock, A standard precision Bass will do.
A Jazz might be too warm for his genre areas.
A P/J setup might be more versatile.
I won't recommend any particular brand here.
Everyone has his/her views.
